How to access the hidden job market in the GCC
How to access the hidden job market in the UAE, KSA, and wider GCC
Your no-nonsense walkthrough to finally getting traction in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, or Riyadh

If you're struggling to secure interviews in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, or Riyadh...
You’ve got an effective CV. You’re checking job boards daily. You’ve sent out 78 applications this week alone. And still, nothing. No interviews, no calls, just radio silence.
If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. Most mid to senior-level professionals targeting jobs in the UAE or Saudi Arabia find themselves here at some point... overqualified, invisible, and completely fed up.
And chances are, you're missing one of the most important elements of an effective job search, visibility on LinkedIn.
Here’s the reality
More than 50% of jobs in the UAE & KSA are filled without EVER being publicly advertised.
And no, it’s not because someone “knew someone.” It’s because someone was found.
Recruiters across the GCC use LinkedIn Recruiter like their life depends on it. It’s not just a sourcing tool. It’s their talent Bible. If you’re not showing up in their filtered searches, you may as well not exist. That’s the hidden job market, and the gatekeeper is LinkedIn’s recruiter platform.
And here's the kick in the teeth - most job seekers in the GCC don’t even know they’re invisible.
Why does the UAE and Saudi job market work like this?
Let’s clear something up, the GCC job market doesn’t behave like the ones in Europe, the US, or even Asia. In cities like Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Riyadh:
- Job boards are flooded with thousands of irrelevant applications within hours.
- Most high-paying roles are filled directly through proactive sourcing, not applications.
- Recruiters are under pressure to hire fast, and they’re judged by how quickly they can fill roles, not how fair the process feels to candidates.
- Speed > Process. Relevance > Credentials. Visibility > Effort.
So, if you’re still spending hours writing cover letters or waiting for that one online application to “get picked up,” you’re not just wasting time, you’re falling behind.
The biggest mistakes job seekers make in the GCC
Let’s get into it. These are the most common errors we see from even the most experienced professionals:
- Thinking it’s about “who you know."
It’s not. It’s about who can find you. That’s a whole different game.
- Using a generic or outdated CV.
If your CV wouldn’t pass through an ATS (Applicant Tracking System), it’s not even making it to a human. And if it’s not optimised for the region? It's not going to work. (see our CV Guide by clicking here)
- Having a weak LinkedIn profile.
You might think LinkedIn is just a networking site or a social media platform, but for recruiters in the GCC, it’s their primary hiring tool. If your profile isn’t set up for visibility in LinkedIn Recruiter search filters, you’re invisible.
- Applying reactively instead of positioning proactively.
Your goal isn’t to apply for roles. It’s to be discovered for them.
Sound harsh? That's fine, the market is harsh - but once you stop doing what doesn’t work, things will start clicking.
Here’s how to actually get noticed in the hidden job market
Ready for a few practical moves you can take right now? These aren’t fluffy “tips”, they’re the actual mechanics that recruiters use every day:

1. Audit your LinkedIn for Recruiter Search Visibility
Most candidates have no idea how LinkedIn Recruiter filters work. Recruiters search by:
- Job title
- Location
- Years of experience
- Industry
- Function
- Keywords in summary, job descriptions, and your profile as a whole
- Education and where it was acquired
- Certifications and where they were acquired
If your LinkedIn doesn’t include these terms in the right sections, you're filtered out.
2. Optimise your job titles for search
Let’s say your current title is “Client Success Strategist.” No one’s searching for that. They’re searching for “Account Manager” or “Customer Success Manager.”
Don’t lie, but adjust your title to reflect how the market searches. A recruiter can't find you for a role if you’re not using the language of that role.
3. Fill out every section, properly
Yes, every section. About, Experience, Skills, Certifications, Languages. LinkedIn’s algorithm ranks complete profiles higher, and recruiters can filter by any of them.
Don’t leave blank spaces. Every field is a doorway to being found.
4. Set your profile to 'Open to Work', the right way
This isn’t about switching on a green circle. You need to:
- Select the correct job titles you’re targeting.
- Choose locations like “Dubai, UAE” and “Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.”
- Choose ‘Recruiters only', don't use the green banner, it won't help.
5. Ditch the “available immediately” posts
They're not helping you. In fact, they can hurt you. Visibility on LinkedIn Recruiter is private. That’s where you want to win, not in public posts that get buried or signal desperation.
Want the insider edge? Let’s go deeper.
Now for the good stuff, the kind of insight only those inside the hiring game truly understand.
We’ve worked with over 550 companies in the GCC. That includes:
- Multinational companies in Dubai
- Government-backed SMEs in Abu Dhabi
- Conglomerates in Riyadh
We don’t just know what they’re hiring, we often know who’s about to be hired.
Here’s what we know, that most people don’t realise:
- Speed is EVERYTHING, the moment a recruiter messages you on LinkedIn, it's critical that you respond immediately. Recruiters aim to start and finish a talent sourcing exercise in an afternoon, not over multiple days.
- Many companies in the GCC are mandated to prioritise locals unless they find a high-level candidate with proven international exposure and regional relevance. Your profile needs to walk that tightrope and leave no doubt that you're the person for the job to outrank everyone else.
- The algorithm rewards recent activity. If your last post was six months ago, LinkedIn thinks your profile is dormant. Engage on a daily basis. Be seen.
How do you know it's working?
You should start seeing these signs within 1-2 weeks of optimising your profile:

- Views on your LinkedIn profile go up, especially from people with “Recruiter” or “Talent Acquisition” in their job title
- You start receiving InMails for roles before you apply
- You’re being shortlisted for roles faster, and feedback loops shorten
- Recruiters are telling you, “You came up in our search…”
If none of that’s happening on a weekly basis, you’re not in the hidden market yet.
