Job description
The Datacenter Operations Engineer is responsible for supporting hyperscale datacenter infrastructure by managing the end-to-end lifecycle of the server fleet and ensuring high availability, scalability, and reliability of cloud and infrastructure services. The role focuses on operational excellence within a 24/7 production environment, handling server support, break-fix activities, hardware troubleshooting, and physical infrastructure tasks. The engineer works closely with internal engineering teams, physical security, environmental health and safety (EHS), and external partners to maintain efficient, secure, and compliant datacenter operations. This position requires hands-on technical expertise in Linux systems, server hardware repairs, networking fundamentals, and datacenter processes, along with the ability to prioritize incidents and escalations within a structured ticketing system.
Required skills
Key responsibilities
- Manage server fleet operations through a ticketing system, including power cycling, hardware diagnostics, troubleshooting, and replacing failed components to maintain service uptime and reliability
- Act as the first point of contact for break-fix technicians by prioritizing ticket queues, resolving escalations, coordinating issue resolution, and ensuring adherence to operational service level agreements
- Perform physical installation, racking, cabling, relocation, and decommissioning of servers and networking equipment while supporting datacenter expansion, retrofit, and capacity growth projects
- Maintain accurate inventory and asset tracking records, collaborate with Physical Security and Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) teams, and ensure compliance with site safety and operational standards
- Build strong cross-functional relationships with infrastructure, network, and cloud engineering teams as well as external vendors to ensure seamless operational workflows and infrastructure efficiency
- Participate in 24/7 shift-based support operations including weekends and holidays, proactively identify risks, contribute to process improvements, and continuously develop technical skills to adapt to evolving technologies and business requirements
Experience & skills
- College or Technician Degree in Engineering or equivalent professional experience and relevant technical certifications in IT infrastructure or datacenter operations
- Minimum of three years of hands-on experience supporting IT equipment, server hardware, or related datacenter technologies in a production environment
- Strong knowledge of Linux operating systems and practical experience performing server hardware diagnostics and repairs
- Working knowledge of networking and infrastructure technologies including HTTP, DNS, RAID configurations, and DHCP
- Ability to operate within structured ticketing systems, manage incident prioritization, and coordinate effectively with break-fix technicians and cross-functional teams
- Willingness to work scheduled 24/7 shifts including holidays, demonstrate strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, adaptability, and a continuous learning mindset
