Job description
Bechtel is opening a new Energy office in Al Khobar to deliver studies, FEEDs, PMC and detail design for Energy Transition, hydrogen, eFuel, oil and gas and petrochemical projects across the region. This Lead Mechanical Engineer runs the mechanical team within that office, supervising direct reports and coordinating globally distributed teams on medium-sized projects. Static and rotating equipment is the core of the discipline here, from selection, sizing and design calculations through to materials evaluation. Expect to oversee Mechanical Equipment Specifications, Datasheets, Material Requisitions, Technical Bid Evaluations, Inspection and Test Plans and vendor document reviews, and to support P&ID, HAZOP and Model reviews. Schedules, budgets and the trend program for change management also sit with you, all within Bechtel's EDPs, design guides and BSAPs. Brownfield work in the Middle East makes up a large part of the portfolio, so familiarity with Aramco standards matters, as does a working knowledge of API, ASME and BS codes. Construction and startup questions will come your way too, and field troubleshooting is part of the job. Mentoring junior engineers and running training for groups inside and outside Mechanical Engineering round out the position. At least 15 years in Energy Transition, Petrochemical or Oil and Gas is required, with Chartered Engineer or Professional Engineer status preferred.
Required skills
Key responsibilities
- Lead mechanical engineering teams, overseeing direct reports and organizing deliverables to achieve project goals
- Coach and mentor junior mechanical engineers through performance reviews and career development discussions
- Plan engineering activities by interpreting project scope, applying industry codes and standards, and developing schedules and budgets
- Manage schedule and cost performance and support change management through the trend program
- Coordinate with other disciplines, clients, suppliers and contractors during the detailed design phase of mechanical equipment
- Prepare formal communications to vendors and clients on mechanical equipment matters
- Contribute to conceptual studies, reports, proposals, cost estimates, quantity take-offs and staffing requirements for forecasts and change orders
- Approve key engineering drawings, calculations and bid summaries
- Oversee Mechanical Equipment Specifications, Datasheets, Material Requisitions, Technical Bid Evaluations, Inspection and Test Plans, vendor document reviews and inspection reports
- Support P&ID, HAZOP and Model reviews and provide input to scoping documents such as the equipment list
- Resolve construction and startup questions and issues with technical support on site
- Communicate complex technical issues and recommend solutions to project engineering management
- Deliver training for groups within and outside Mechanical Engineering
Experience & skills
- Hold a BEng./MEng. or equivalent degree in mechanical engineering or an allied engineering discipline
- Bring at least 15 years of experience in the Energy Transition, Petrochemical and/or Oil and Gas industry
- Possess Chartered Engineer or Professional Engineer status from a recognised engineering council or licensing board (preferred)
- Demonstrate leadership as a group supervisor with comprehensive knowledge of Bechtel work processes and standards
- Show extensive experience on Middle Eastern brownfield projects and strong familiarity with Aramco standards and specifications
- Offer a background in greenfield and brownfield execution across sectors such as eFuels, hydrogen, natural gas processing, refining, petrochemicals, carbon capture, power and water treatment
- Understand Pre-FEED, FEED and PMC phases and the selection, sizing, design calculations and materials evaluation of static and rotating equipment
- Know industry regulations and codes such as API, ASME and BS
- Integrate constructability, project economics and material selection into mechanical engineering requirements
- Troubleshoot mechanical and process challenges in field and job site settings
