Job description
The WAS Specialist is responsible for the deployment, management, and optimization of Web Application Server infrastructure, including Apache Tomcat and Microsoft IIS. This role focuses on performance tuning, security compliance, automation, and support for both on-premise and cloud-based web application environments. The role also supports IT operations by contributing to incident and problem management, maintaining system health, and leading continuous improvement initiatives. Candidates should have a strong technical background in scripting, automation, and enterprise web server technologies.

Key responsibilities
- Advise and assist in the design, deployment, and maintenance of WAS infrastructure
- Collaborate with development teams to architect scalable application server solutions
- Develop and maintain deployment processes and scripts
- Configure and optimize server settings for performance and reliability
- Configure and manage load balancers and clustering solutions
- Implement failover and disaster recovery strategies
- Ensure security compliance and conduct regular assessments
- Monitor application performance using tools like Dynatrace
- Analyze performance metrics and implement optimizations
- Document architecture, configurations, and best practices
- Conduct training sessions on WAS expertise
- Implement configuration management using Ansible, Puppet, or similar tools
- Develop Ansible playbooks and automation scripts
- Integrate CI/CD pipelines for automated deployments
- Participate in command centre operations, incident and problem management
- Coordinate recovery actions during major incidents
- Support post-incident root cause analysis
- Assist with platform best practices and automation job setup
- Conduct system capacity reviews and performance monitoring
- Refine alert thresholds and examine logs for anomalies
- Simulate incidents and run health checks
- Review patches and advise on deployment plans
- Audit configurations and maintain knowledge base
- Collaborate with development and infrastructure teams
- Report on system health and propose improvements
Experience & skills
- Bachelorās degree in computer science, information systems, or equivalent experience
- At least 3 years of hands-on experience in IT automation with Ansible
- Experience with Puppet, Chef, Terraform, SaltStack
- Strong background in Apache Tomcat, Microsoft IIS
- Experience in scripting languages like Python, PowerShell, or Bash
- Understanding of load balancing, clustering, and high availability
- Experience in security practices including encryption and access control
- Proficiency in monitoring tools like Dynatrace
- Knowledge of CI/CD and DevSecOps practices
- Experience in system audits and configuration compliance
- Strong problem-solving and technical troubleshooting skills
- Ability to perform well under pressure and support incident recovery
- Knowledge of regulatory frameworks like SAMA, NCA, CBB, CBUAE, CBO
- Ability to communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders
