Job description
The Engineering Lead role is a senior technical and leadership position within Woodâs Oil & Gas engineering operations, supporting an international client operator delivering a portfolio of onshore capital projects in Basra, Iraq. The position is full-time and onsite in Basra with travel requirements, while administratively aligned to Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The role contributes to engineering excellence by defining and approving technical scopes, executing complex engineering work, and providing discipline-level technical authority. The Engineering Lead delivers high-level engineering expertise across Greenfield and Brownfield modification projects, including EPC contract management, supply chain, construction, and commissioning support. The role includes assessing feasibility and soundness of engineering designs, leading technical reviews, guiding complex problem-solving, supporting business development, and contributing to low-carbon solutions aligned with energy transition and emissions reduction goals. The position requires deep knowledge of oil and gas engineering, refinery environments, flare networks, produced water systems, firewater systems, regulatory frameworks, and engineering standards, while exercising technical authority over teams and acting as a recognized specialist within the organization.

Key responsibilities
- Define and approve technical scopes of work for projects and proposals
- Establish scopes of work, allocate engineering resources, and direct staff execution
- Develop and implement engineering procedures, methods, and controls
- Execute assigned engineering scopes of work in accordance with project requirements
- Develop engineering design solutions delivering high-standard products, equipment, and materials
- Direct scheduling, cost control, and technical conformance during project design phases
- Coordinate engineering activities with clients and cross-functional groups
- Promote and enforce discipline-specific procedures and continuous improvement practices
- Participate in or lead incident investigations as required
- Establish design constraints and prepare engineering development proposals and feasibility studies
- Develop new or modified components, products, processes, materials, and equipment as required
- Plan and execute complex engineering projects, resolving conflicts and coordinating multidisciplinary work
- Review technical feasibility of proposed engineering solutions and personally resolve complex technical issues
- Anticipate potential problems and apply creative engineering solutions using internal and external resources
- Lead engineering design reviews and track discipline performance metrics against project plans
- Provide discipline expertise and act as an expert technical advisor to project teams and management
- Represent the engineering discipline on contracts, projects, and service lines
- Perform the role of Technical Authority when appointed
- Support innovation, new ideas, and best practices to improve engineering performance
- Contribute to business growth through client engagement, relationship building, and opportunity identification
- Support business development activities and represent the company at conferences and public events
Experience & skills
- MSc or BSc in Chemical Engineering
- Minimum of 15 years of experience in the oil and gas industry
- Membership of a recognized professional engineering institute preferred
- Extensive knowledge of oil and gas engineering standards, specifications, and construction practices
- Advanced knowledge of regulatory frameworks and associated legislation
- Experience in refinery environments, flare networks, produced water systems, and firewater systems
- Experience managing engineering scopes, cost control, scheduling, and technical conformance
- Ability to act as a recognized technical authority within an engineering discipline
- Previous experience working in the Middle East is advantageous
