Job description
ByteDance is seeking an experienced Privacy Counsel (Regulatory) to provide legal support for data privacy and data protection matters across APAC and Emerging Markets (AEM). Based in Dubai, this role will manage regulatory matters for the company in over 120+ jurisdictions, including leading regulatory investigations, litigation, government policy engagement, and external communications. The counsel will track privacy trends across markets, develop policies and standards, coordinate internal projects and training, and provide actionable legal deliverables. The position requires expertise in global privacy frameworks (GDPR, CCPA, and APAC/AEM regulations) and increasing advisory focus on algorithmic and AI-related legal issues.

Key responsibilities
- Provide data privacy legal support in the APAC and Emerging Markets region, managing regulatory matters for the company.
- Lead on regulatory investigations, litigation, government policy, and external communications related to privacy issues.
- Monitor privacy laws and trends across markets to identify issues and address them proactively.
- Coordinate internal communication, projects, and training among different legal and business teams.
- Develop standards and policies to improve workflow efficiency and address redundancies.
- Advise on compliance with global privacy laws including GDPR, CCPA, and APAC frameworks.
- Merge legal solutions across jurisdictions to balance global consistency with regional needs.
- Advise increasingly on algorithmic and artificial intelligence-related regulatory issues.
Experience & skills
- Qualified to practice law and in good standing in UK, US, or another common law jurisdiction.
- Significant experience managing privacy legal and regulatory matters.
- Experience working on global/regional data privacy efforts for a multinational corporation or agency.
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to coordinate across multiple teams and countries.
- Fluency in written and spoken English.
- Preferred: internationally recognized data privacy certifications or courses.
- Preferred: experience leading contentious and complex regulatory issues.
- Preferred: experience and personal interest in technology, social media, and digital platforms.
