Job description
The Principal Control System Engineer role at Wood in Abu Dhabi is a senior-level engineering position within the Oil, Gas & New Energies business, focused on delivering detailed control system design for large-scale, high-profile onshore and offshore energy projects. The role is responsible for ensuring performance, reliability, and compliance with international industry standards across integrated and innovative energy solutions, including upstream, midstream, gas-to-liquids, decarbonization, and electrification projects. The position requires deep expertise in Integrated Control and Safety Systems (ICSS) and Functional Safety, including SIL studies, Safety Requirements Specifications (SRS), Safety Integrity Level verification, and Functional Safety Assessments. The engineer ensures that all detailed design methods, standards, calculations, and engineering data used on assigned projects meet stringent client requirements and global regulatory codes. The role contributes to project scheduling, design reviews, and technical studies, including calculations required to finalize electrical and control equipment specifications. As part of Woodâs market-leading energy delivery organization, the role supports transformative projects focused on energy security, transition, and low-carbon solutions. The position demands extensive experience in mega Oil & Gas or petrochemical projects, team leadership, and familiarity with international engineering standards, with prior Middle East or GCC experience considered a strong advantage.

Key responsibilities
- Provide expert-level engineering input for Integrated Control and Safety Systems (ICSS) and Functional Safety activities including SIL studies, SRS development, SIL verification, and Functional Safety Assessments
- Ensure detailed control system design methods, standards, calculations, and data fully comply with client requirements and international codes and standards
- Participate in project scheduling, technical reviews, and multidisciplinary project review activities
- Perform engineering calculations and technical studies to finalize control and electrical equipment specifications
- Support delivery of large-scale offshore and onshore oil and gas and petrochemical projects while maintaining performance, reliability, and compliance
Experience & skills
- Hold a Bachelorâs degree or equivalent from an accredited university with a minimum of 15 years of relevant experience in the offshore and onshore Oil & Gas industry
- Demonstrate at least 5 years of experience in a similar senior position on mega Oil & Gas or petrochemical projects managing teams of engineers and designers
- Exhibit full coherence with international engineering codes and standards applicable to control and safety systems
- Possess strong experience with Integrated Control and Safety Systems and Functional Safety methodologies
- Demonstrate excellent command of spoken and written English with flexibility to work on Middle East and GCC-based projects
