Job description
The role involves advising clients on VAT treatment of new and complex transactions, resolving classification disputes, and collaborating within EY’s global network of indirect tax professionals. The position requires deep understanding of Customs Law, regional Free Trade Agreements, and key customs concepts such as valuation, classification and origin. Responsibilities include assisting with outbound investment VAT considerations, supporting audit and transaction projects with indirect tax expertise, preparing for the potential introduction of VAT in various countries, and delivering VAT advice related to global jurisdictions. The role requires preparation of reports and schedules, participation in management meetings, maintaining productive client relationships, identifying areas of VAT risk, applying effective review processes, and adhering to best practices across the VAT and Indirect Tax service lines.

Key responsibilities
- Work as part of a global network of advisors, sharing responsibility, providing support, and maintaining communication with senior team members.
- Collaborate with VAT professionals to combine cross-border transaction experience with local tax knowledge across various industries.
- Participate in and assist with preparation for meetings with management teams.
- Prepare detailed reports and schedules for delivery to clients and other stakeholders.
- Develop and maintain strong working relationships with client personnel and internal teams.
- Build a deep understanding of Customs Law and its practical application across relevant countries.
- Apply regional Free Trade Agreements and customs concepts such as valuation, classification, and origin.
- Identify and discuss VAT considerations for outbound investments.
- Engage with overseas offices to deliver VAT advice for global jurisdictions.
- Prepare clients for the potential introduction of VAT in different countries and assess impacts.
- Provide indirect tax expertise for audit and transaction projects.
- Identify areas of risk, review work effectively, and escalate matters where required.
- Plan and prioritise work, manage deadlines, and monitor personal budget.
Experience & skills
- Degree in economics, finance, tax or accounting.
- At least three years of relevant experience as an Indirect Tax professional.
- Experience working with a Big 4 accounting firm preferred, though law firm or relevant industry experience will be considered.
- Customs duty advisory experience preferable; VAT/GST advisory experience also acceptable.
- Ability to build strong client relationships and communicate effectively in written and oral English.
- Ability to identify risks, conduct effective reviews, and escalate appropriately.
- Commercial awareness and ability to work collaboratively within teams.
- Strong project management capabilities, including planning, prioritisation, deadline management, and budget monitoring.
- Ability to solve problems creatively and pragmatically.
