Job description
The Engineering Lead at Wood is a senior technical role responsible for delivering engineering excellence within onshore oil and gas capital projects in Basra, Iraq, under Woodâs general engineering contract with an international client. The position involves providing high-level engineering leadership, defining and approving technical scopes, executing complex design deliverables, and ensuring technical integrity across multi-disciplinary teams. The Engineering Lead acts as a technical authority and subject matter expert, overseeing the design, development, and implementation of both Greenfield and Brownfield projects, while integrating low-carbon and emissions-reduction solutions aligned with energy transition objectives. The role includes developing and maintaining business management systems, reviewing engineering designs, managing schedules and costs, ensuring compliance with regulatory frameworks, and leading design reviews. The Engineering Lead contributes to business growth through client engagement and thought leadership while mentoring junior engineers and supporting capability development across the organization. The position demands deep expertise in multiple engineering disciplines, extensive knowledge of industry standards, and proficiency in refinery environments, flare networks, produced water and firewater systems, and other oil and gas operational areas. Based in Dubai with regular travel to Basra, Iraq, this role reports to senior management and plays a critical part in ensuring engineering excellence and technical innovation across major capital projects.
Required skills
Key responsibilities
- Define and approve technical scopes of work for projects and proposals within assigned engineering disciplines
- Develop, implement, and maintain procedures, methods, and controls to ensure technical and operational excellence
- Oversee design solutions and engineering deliverables to meet project requirements and client expectations
- Coordinate design schedules, cost control, and technical conformance during project design phases
- Ensure adherence to engineering standards, safety protocols, and regulatory compliance across all deliverables
- Lead and participate in incident investigations, ensuring lessons learned are implemented effectively
- Review and validate technical feasibility of proposed engineering designs and solutions
- Anticipate and resolve complex technical problems using creative, multidisciplinary approaches
- Lead design reviews and ensure continuous improvement in engineering processes and documentation
- Provide discipline expertise and act as a technical authority for assigned projects or service lines
- Contribute to long-term planning, innovation, and introduction of new engineering practices
- Support business development activities through client relationship management and technical proposal input
- Provide coaching, mentoring, and technical guidance to less experienced engineers and staff
- Direct work assignments, scheduling, and performance reviews for assigned engineering personnel
- Supervise subcontracted design engineering teams and ensure deliverables meet project and safety requirements
- Engage with internal and external stakeholders including clients, contractors, and industry bodies
- Promote cross-functional collaboration and knowledge sharing within and across regional offices
- Ensure HSSE leadership and compliance in both office and site environments
- Monitor project progress, budget variance, and resource allocation to ensure operational efficiency
Experience & skills
- Hold an MSc or BSc in Chemical Engineering
- Possess a minimum of 15 years of experience in the oil and gas industry, with extensive exposure to engineering management and design
- Demonstrate expertise in flare networks, produced water systems, firewater systems, and refinery operations
- Show proven ability to lead multi-disciplinary engineering teams and act as a technical authority
- Exhibit strong knowledge of industry standards, engineering codes, and construction practices
- Have supervisory experience with demonstrated ability to manage resources and personnel effectively
- Display advanced knowledge of health, safety, and environmental management in oil and gas operations
- Demonstrate strong technical writing, reporting, and presentation skills with excellent English communication
- Show proficiency in scope definition, project scheduling, and cost control within engineering contexts
- Have the ability to solve complex engineering problems using creative and analytical approaches
- Experience working in the Middle East preferred, particularly in Iraq or similar project environments
- Possess strong business acumen with an understanding of client engagement and growth opportunities
- Membership in a recognized professional engineering institute is preferred
- Be willing to work full-time on-site in Basra, Iraq, with travel requirements between Iraq and UAE offices
