Job description
OQ8 runs the refinery at Duqm, and its Production Planning & Scheduling team relies on LP and APS models to decide what the plant processes and when. This position owns those models, reporting to the Head of Production Planning & Scheduling with no direct reports. Keeping the refinery LP model and APS Scheduling model true to reality is the heart of the job, covering refinery configuration, feedstock characteristics, logistics, process limitations and product specifications. Each month brings a full model update cycle with fixed deadlines. Between those cycles, plan-versus-actual analysis shows where predictions drift from actual refinery performance, and you trace the root cause and correct the model. The crude assay database also sits with you, feeding crude evaluations, sensitivity analyses, scenario modelling and LP optimization studies aimed at margin maximization. Much of the week involves coordination with Process Engineering, Operations and Commercial, plus 3rd Party Contractors. Reporting automation, dashboards and digitalization work round out the role, alongside monthly modelling status reports for management. Proficiency in Aspen PIMS⢠and Aspen Petroleum Scheduler (APS), or equivalent refinery optimization and scheduling software, is expected, backed by 10+ years in production planning, refinery economics and production scheduling.
Required skills
Key responsibilities
- Maintain, validate, and continuously enhance the refinery LP model to represent refinery configuration, process unit performance, operational constraints, product specifications, feedstock characteristics, and economic drivers
- Develop and optimize the APS Scheduling model to reflect refinery operation, logistics constraints, inventory management requirements, and scheduling limitations
- Ensure LP and APS models represent current refinery operating constraints and business requirements
- Act as the Production Planning & Scheduling focal point for all LP and APS modelling activities, coordinating with Process Engineering, Operations, and Commercial
- Manage the monthly LP and APS model update cycle, reviewing and validating inputs, assumptions, operating parameters, constraints, and crude data
- Deliver validated and up-to-date LP and APS models within agreed planning and scheduling deadlines
- Implement model updates arising from operational changes, process unit modifications, catalyst changes, and debottlenecking initiatives
- Perform plan-versus-actual analyses, determine root causes, and apply corrective model improvements
- Govern the refinery crude assay database to ensure data accuracy, integrity, completeness, and timely updates
- Support crude evaluations, feedstock flexibility assessments, operational studies, and refinery optimization initiatives
- Conduct LP optimization studies, sensitivity analyses, economic evaluations, and scenario modelling
- Build reporting systems, dashboards, visualization tools, and automated solutions to improve planning and scheduling effectiveness
- Provide model-based insights and recommendations on feedstock selection, planning accuracy, and value improvement opportunities
- Prepare and issue monthly modelling status reports and management updates
- Document model assumptions, operating limits, yields, constraints, methodologies, and change history to support model governance

- Show proficiency in Aspen PIMS⢠or equivalent refinery optimization software, including model development and maintenance
- Possess proficiency in Aspen Petroleum Scheduler (APS) or equivalent refinery scheduling software, including model development and maintenance
- Apply strong data management and analytical capabilities to complex operational and economic data
- Have experience in reporting automation, dashboard development, and digitalization initiatives
- Understand refinery processes, equipment, and optimization techniques
- Offer experience in crude assay management and refinery economics
- Coordinate effectively across Production Planning & Scheduling, Operations, Process Engineering, and Commercial functions
