Job description
Mastercard is seeking an experienced lawyer to join its global legal team as Senior Counsel for its Commercial Solutions division. This role will provide legal support for the development, commercialization, and distribution of products and services that streamline B2B and travel payments. The Senior Counsel will work closely with product, sales, marketing, and franchise teams to draft and negotiate a wide variety of complex contracts, mitigate legal risks, and ensure compliance with Mastercard’s policies and industry regulations. The position requires strong commercial acumen, the ability to navigate complex regulatory frameworks, and extensive experience in handling cross-border legal issues in the payments or financial services sector.

Key responsibilities
- Partner with product, sales, franchise, marketing, and other teams to develop and launch innovative products and solutions.
- Structure and negotiate a wide range of contracts, including complex technology, customer, and vendor agreements.
- Collaborate with in-house and external specialists (regulatory, compliance, data protection, intellectual property) to address legal risks.
- Support Commercial Solutions business development teams on product sales initiatives.
- Advise the business on a broad range of commercial and contractual matters, including legal risk assessments.
- Manage special projects while handling day-to-day legal matters.
- Ensure compliance with Mastercard policies and procedures and provide training where applicable.
- Manage external counsel within policy and budget.
Experience & skills
- Qualified lawyer licensed to practice in the relevant jurisdiction with strong academic and training background.
- Extensive legal experience, preferably including in-house work.
- Familiarity with laws and regulations in commercial banking and payments.
- Strong drafting and negotiation skills across complex commercial contracts.
- Experience with transactional, commercial, and technology law issues.
- Strong working knowledge of data privacy and intellectual property law.
- Experience working on global agreements across multiple jurisdictions and time zones.
- Ability to work flexibly under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
- Strong business acumen with an interest in technology.
