Job description
To provide leadership, oversight, and strategic vision for the Distinctive Collections Division in alignment with Qatar National Libraryâs mission to preserve and promote Qatar and the regionâs heritage. The Director will manage acquisitions, preservation, cataloging, digitization, and promotion of unique physical and digital collections including archives, manuscripts, and photographs. The role also involves spearheading scholarly events, fostering external collaborations, developing policies, and leading a diverse team in a high-performance environment.

Key responsibilities
- Work closely with QNL Executive Director and management to support the Libraryâs vision and mission.
- Provide expert advice to QNL on distinctive collections matters.
- Lead strategic planning and manage operations, budgets, and HR for the division.
- Oversee acquisitions, cataloging, preservation, and access to unique collections including manuscripts, photographs, and digital media.
- Develop and refine collection development policies and related operational policies.
- Lead the conservation, preservation, and heritage science functions.
- Oversee space management and collection safety, including item movement and display.
- Develop programs such as lectures, exhibitions, and scholarly conferences.
- Create partnerships and collaborations to increase public and academic engagement.
- Implement educational and research initiatives using QNLâs unique collections.
- Engage with donors and stakeholders to enhance the libraryâs holdings and funding.
- Ensure strong performance and professional growth within the division.
- Collaborate with IT and cataloging for digitization projects and metadata standards.
- Promote QNLâs collections locally, regionally, and globally.
- Represent QNL on committees and in professional organizations to promote access and preservation.
- Engage in professional and scholarly activities aligned with QNLâs goals.
- Other duties as assigned.
Experience & skills
- Extensive leadership experience in libraries, archives, or cultural heritage institutions.
- Deep knowledge of collection development, conservation, and digitization strategies.
- Experience managing large teams, complex budgets, and strategic initiatives.
- Familiarity with best practices in library science and cultural heritage preservation.
- Experience planning academic programs, exhibitions, and public events.
- Proven ability to engage with academic communities, donors, and international stakeholders.
- Strong communication, negotiation, and stakeholder management skills.
- Advanced understanding of cataloging systems, metadata, copyright law, and digitization workflows.
- Active engagement in professional networks and scholarly contributions to the field.
