Job description
The Data Analyst (Operations Intelligence & Strategy) at Tap Payments is responsible for defining, documenting, and validating key operations metrics, performing cohort analyses, and ensuring data quality to empower leadership with actionable insights. The role includes designing KPIs and metrics frameworks, reviewing dashboards for inconsistencies, guiding engineers and product teams on building accurate data pipelines and visualizations, and producing cohort analyses comparing merchant segments, markets, and time periods. The analyst develops and maintains a comprehensive Metrics Dictionary, validates data integrity, and collaborates with GRC and Finance to align Ops metrics with regulatory and financial standards. The position demands meticulous attention to detail, statistical understanding, and the ability to clearly communicate metric definitions and methodology to non-technical stakeholders. It directly impacts the accuracy of operational reporting, supports strategic decision-making, and ensures operational performance is monitored consistently across payment and merchant operations.
Required skills
Key responsibilities
- Define criteria and formulas for all key operations metrics including acceptance rates, chargeback ratios, onboarding TTL, KYC queue age, SLA breach rates, and dispute resolution times
- Work with operations leadership to design new KPIs when new domains or functions are introduced
- Review and audit existing dashboards and reports to identify measurement inconsistencies, formula errors, or misleading visual representations
- Guide React Native Engineers and product teams on building accurate data pipelines and dashboard visualizations that reflect defined metrics
- Produce cohort analyses comparing merchant segments, market performance, BIN group behavior, and time-period comparisons
- Define segmentation logic for merchants, active status, and transaction outcomes to ensure accurate classification for reporting
- Develop and maintain a Metrics Dictionary detailing each metric's formula, data source, refresh frequency, and known limitations
- Validate data quality in collaboration with Engineering, identifying data gaps, duplicates, or incorrect event tracking impacting report accuracy
- Support leadership with ad-hoc analyses, delivering specific data cuts to answer operational or strategic questions
- Ensure Ops metrics align with regulatory reporting requirements and financial reconciliation standards in collaboration with GRC and Finance
Experience & skills
- 2–4 years of experience as a data analyst, preferably in fintech, payments, or e-commerce
- Strong SQL skills with ability to write complex queries across multiple tables
- Experience defining KPIs and metrics frameworks, not just extracting numbers
- Proficiency with BI tools such as Metabase, Looker, Tableau, or Power BI
- Understanding of cohort analysis, averages, percentiles, rates, and basic statistical concepts
- Ability to identify and correct misleading aggregations
- Understanding of payment processing metrics including authorization rates, chargeback ratios, and settlement cycles
- Ability to clearly explain metric definitions and methodologies to non-technical stakeholders
- Meticulous documentation of formulas, data sources, and assumptions
- Degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Economics, Computer Science, or equivalent
- Ability to deliver ad-hoc analyses within tight deadlines and maintain accuracy of operational reporting
