Job description
The Engineering Lead at Wood is a senior technical and leadership role responsible for directing multidisciplinary engineering activities across major onshore oil and gas capital projects in Basra, Iraq. The position reports to senior management and provides technical authority, guidance, and oversight to ensure the successful definition, design, and delivery of project scopes aligned with client and company standards. This includes managing engineering execution, maintaining compliance with HSSE and quality standards, resolving technical challenges, and leading a team of engineers and designers across multiple disciplines. The role requires strong technical expertise, project management acumen, and the ability to drive performance in complex environments. The Engineering Lead plays a key role in fostering innovation, maintaining stakeholder relationships, and contributing to business growth initiatives while upholding Woodâs engineering excellence and safety culture.

Key responsibilities
- Lead engineering execution for assigned oil and gas projects, ensuring adherence to scope, budget, and schedule.
- Define and approve technical scopes of work, ensuring compliance with contractual and engineering standards.
- Provide direction, mentorship, and supervision to multidisciplinary engineering teams and technical specialists.
- Ensure design solutions meet project and client requirements, delivering high-quality, safe, and cost-effective outcomes.
- Coordinate with project controls, procurement, and construction teams to align deliverables with project milestones.
- Participate in design reviews, risk assessments, and incident investigations, ensuring HSSE compliance throughout project lifecycle.
- Review and approve key engineering deliverables, technical documents, and design packages.
- Develop and implement engineering methods, procedures, and quality assurance measures for continuous improvement.
- Contribute to feasibility studies, technical proposals, and business development opportunities within Woodâs Oil & Gas division.
- Serve as a technical authority, advising project teams and clients on complex engineering issues and design solutions.
- Monitor engineering performance metrics, manage resources efficiently, and report progress to senior management.
- Drive innovation by introducing new technologies, design approaches, and best practices to improve project delivery.
- Represent Wood at client meetings, conferences, and technical forums, promoting the companyâs capabilities and standards.
- Provide coaching, mentoring, and performance feedback to junior and mid-level engineers to build team capability.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, industry codes, and project-specific design standards.
Experience & skills
- MSc or BSc degree in Chemical Engineering or related discipline.
- Minimum of 15 years of engineering experience in the oil and gas industry, including supervisory and project leadership roles.
- Demonstrated expertise in engineering management, multidisciplinary design coordination, and project delivery.
- Strong knowledge of industry standards, specifications, and international engineering codes.
- Experience in flare networks, produced water systems, firewater systems, and refinery environments preferred.
- Proficiency in engineering design tools, cost and schedule control systems, and documentation platforms.
- Effective leadership skills with proven ability to manage and motivate teams under complex project conditions.
- Excellent communication, technical writing, and presentation abilities.
- Experience working in the Middle East, particularly Iraq or GCC, preferred.
- Membership in a recognized professional engineering institution is an advantage.
- Strong problem-solving skills, business acumen, and the ability to make sound technical and operational decisions under pressure.
