Job description
The Principal Pipeline Welding Engineer is a senior specialist within the Engineering function supporting the energy value chain across subsea infrastructure, offshore platforms installed hundreds of miles from shore, offshore wind infrastructure, and onshore energy landscape developments designed to deliver energy products safely and sustainably. Based in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, the role is responsible for interpreting internal and external business issues and recommending best practices, solving complex Welding-related problems independently with minimal guidance, and leading functional teams or projects as a recognized authority in Welding. The position provides technical leadership to the Welding Engineering discipline and delivers Metallurgical consultative welding services to the operations group and PMT for onshore & offshore projects, particularly subsea pipelines. Core accountability includes preparation and management of the Project Welding Qualification Execution Plan defining the full scope of Weld Procedures required, detailed schedule of qualification, and quantity of welding consumables and materials required for qualification; establishing proper priorities aligned with project schedules and reviewing progress; and performing review and approval of all Project Weld Procedures through direct and indirect communications with the customer and Certifying Authority. The engineer performs appropriate selection of electrodes based on physical, chemical, and corrosion properties, weldability, and economics; reviews project schedules, material control reports, and welding consumable estimates to determine required changes to the welding execution plan; completes welding consumable project-specific requirements estimation, requisitioning, and monitoring forecast of DOE consumables; and conducts Readiness review for important offshore campaigns. The role manages the welding school facility for training and development of the workforce to improve welding methodology and good workmanship practices, assists in the support and development of automatic welding systems, and works closely with Fabrication Management, Yard Welding Dept, Marine Group, and AWS group on future R&D developments and the latest technology available related to welding of Ferrous materials and Non-Ferrous materials. The Principal Pipeline Welding Engineer maintains contact with internal and external technical groups such as Global Welding Group, TWI, DNV, EWI, Welding Equipment and Consumable manufacturers, Consulting firms, Certifying Authority, QC/NDT Engineers, Engineering Group, Bidding group, Project Management, Operations Manager (Fabrication / Marine), Discipline Managers, PMT, Customers, and Operations /Field Engineers to ensure alignment with latest technology and project requirements. The role assists in resolving Metallurgical, Welding, and Quality-related problems by investigating causes of failures and prescribing fit-for-purpose solutions, initiates 'Fit for Purpose' evaluations of nonconforming work, evaluates performance of Welding Engineers including decisions on training needs, classification, and compensation, visits vendor facilities for technical evaluation, ensures input for bidding is provided through the Welding Engineering Group, reviews and estimates for bids, and monitors projects during the execution stage to ensure compliance with approved Weld Procedures and project objectives. The position requires MS/M Tech/ME in Welding or BS/BE/B Tech in Welding/Metallurgy/Mechanical Engineering with 8+ years directly related to Welding, Metallurgy and Materials, and subsea pipelines, with C Eng., SenMemWeldI/Member of professional body, and Welding Inspection Qualification preferred.
