Job description
The Field Protection Engineer role at Siemens in Abu Dhabi focuses on testing, commissioning, and validation of advanced protection and automation systems within high-voltage power transmission and substation environments. The position is part of the Smart Infrastructure Digital Grid – Energy Automation & Protection team and involves working on Siemens protection platforms including SIPROTEC 4, SIPROTEC 5, and Reyrolle systems. The engineer is responsible for executing factory and site acceptance testing (FAT/SAT), preparing technical documentation, commissioning procedures, and test protocols for protection and automation systems. The role requires strong expertise in IEC 61850 communication standards, GOOSE messaging, and substation automation architecture, including configuration of SCD, ICD, and CID files, as well as control logic development using BCPU/BCU systems. The engineer performs advanced protection testing using OMICRON equipment and Test Universe software, covering functions such as distance protection, line differential, transformer differential, busbar protection, and reactor protection systems. Responsibilities include fault analysis, root cause investigation, and technical troubleshooting of HV and substation protection schemes. The role also involves delivering technical presentations, supporting customer interactions, and contributing to continuous improvement of protection systems. The position requires working in international project environments across the Middle East, collaborating with utilities and global engineering teams to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient energy infrastructure operation.

Key responsibilities
- Perform testing and commissioning of protection and automation systems for Siemens projects
- Prepare and execute FAT and SAT protocols including technical documentation
- Conduct customer Pre-FAT and FAT activities for protection panels
- Develop commissioning procedures including method statements and work permits
- Perform advanced protection testing using OMICRON Test Universe tools
- Test HV protection schemes including distance, line differential, transformer differential, and busbar protection
- Perform fault analysis and root cause investigations on protection systems
- Support product feedback and continuous improvement initiatives
- Deliver technical presentations to customers and stakeholders
- Ensure proper configuration of IEC 61850-based systems including SCD, ICD, and CID files
Experience & skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics, or Electrical & Communication Engineering
- 3–5 years of experience in protection and automation commissioning
- Experience with substation protection systems in international or Middle East markets
- Hands-on experience with Siemens SIPROTEC and Reyrolle systems
- Strong knowledge of IEC 61850 communication standards and GOOSE applications
- Experience using OMICRON test equipment and Test Universe software
- Experience with HV transmission protection schemes
- Knowledge of relay configuration and substation automation systems
- Ability to perform fault analysis and commissioning activities
- Strong communication skills and ability to work in international teams
- Fluency in English
