Job description
The Medical Advisor – Hematology role is a hybrid position with at least 50% field-based activity, providing scientific expertise in a highly strategic therapeutic area and building and maintaining AstraZeneca’s scientific leadership in hematology. The role involves extensive engagement with external stakeholders, including major hospitals, institutions, authorities, policy and decision makers, payer groups, and government researchers, to build scientific and strategic partnerships that strengthen the healthcare ecosystem, improve treatment outcomes, and enable patient access to quality care. The Medical Advisor provides strategic input into medical and brand strategy development and lifecycle management (LCM), leads the design and implementation of medical activities aligned with strategy, and exerts therapeutic area leadership within cross-functional teams focused on transforming care. The role includes delivery of medical education and clinical support to healthcare professionals, training sales teams, mentoring Medical Science Liaisons (MSLs), reviewing promotional and non-promotional materials, and may lead Medical Information and Pharmacovigilance activities within the market. The position requires deep scientific expertise in hematology, strong stakeholder management, compliance with global and local governance standards, and active contribution to internal and external medical strategy execution.

Key responsibilities
- Design and deliver the medical strategic plan for the hematology therapeutic area
- Provide strategic medical and scientific input into brand strategies and lifecycle management in collaboration with Medical Affairs Leadership and cross-functional teams
- Develop and implement Key External Expert engagement plans and build advocacy among priority stakeholders
- Identify, prioritize, and expand Key External Experts based on scientific expertise and clinical influence within hospitals and institutions
- Map patient care pathways, multidisciplinary teams, and account maturity to prioritize engagement
- Build and implement scientific programs and partnerships to address unmet medical needs in priority disease areas
- Collect, analyze, and share actionable scientific and clinical insights with internal stakeholders
- Lead strategic planning discussions and deliver medical-scientific presentations with institutional decision makers and medication access stakeholders
- Act as the internal scientific expert in hematology and mentor Medical Affairs team members and Medical Science Liaisons
- Deliver medical education and clinical support to healthcare professionals and train sales teams
- Review medical activities and materials to ensure compliance with internal policies, procedures, and regulatory standards
- Respond to unsolicited medical information requests regarding unapproved or off-label product use in a balanced, non-promotional, and scientifically accurate manner
- Support or lead Medical Information and Pharmacovigilance activities within the assigned market
Experience & skills
- Hold a Bachelor’s degree in Medicine or Pharmacy
- Possess a minimum of 2 years of consistent performance in a Medical Affairs role
- Have hematology experience or exposure within a medical or pharmaceutical environment
- Demonstrate experience in cross-functional project leadership and stakeholder management
- Maintain extensive knowledge of regulatory requirements, scientific developments, and therapeutic area advancements
- Exhibit strong scientific knowledge, strategic mindset, and expertise in disease management and clinical data
- Show capability to develop strategic partnerships and act independently within a regulated healthcare environment
