Job description
The Senior Well Engineer is responsible for well engineering on a project within drilling and well operations, requiring both detailed and broad well engineering and operations knowledge, including the ability to design wells for a wide range of well types and different rig operations. The role includes reviewing and approving the Well Proposal and Basis of Design, following the technical execution of Well Programs, reviewing and approving End-of-Well reports, and reviewing and approving well operations procedures such as Casing running and cementing. The Senior Well Engineer participates in selection and evaluation of service companies, suppliers, and equipment; ensures proper communication with client, segments, and third parties; participates in cost control of programs versus AFE by analyzing solutions; and assures Technical Integrity of Well Operations programs. The position involves participating in well performance reviews to increase ft/day and reduce flat time, reviewing and approving project well control briefing, reviewing new technology for possible application to the project, taking an active role in Drilling TIC projects, and using InTouch for best practices, lessons learned, and technical alerts. The engineer ensures best practices and lessons learned are transferred between all rigs on a project, verifies invoices for service companies, deputizes for the Project Manager as required, participates in HARC's, ensures compliance to IDS Standards and Procedures, reviews requests for exemptions to IDS Standards in QUEST, reviews SQ RIR's resulting from well operations in QUEST, participates in and leads SQ investigations, reviews and approves Management of Change to well programs, forecasts and plans medium and long term needs to meet program requirements, anticipates operational changes and revises plans accordingly, participates in Daily Morning Meetings, evaluates results versus goals and performance of service companies, monitors daily Time/Depth progress and participates in daily performance calls, monitors daily cost/depth progress versus AFE, reviews performance trends including NPT across all rigs, initiates engineering corrective action for continuous improvement, and initiates engineering studies to solve recurring problems such as wellbore stability, lost circulation, and washouts, with a minimum of 15 years experience required.
Required skills
Key responsibilities
- Lead and take full technical ownership of well engineering activities on a project by designing wells for a wide range of well types and different rig operations, reviewing and approving the Well Proposal and Basis of Design, technically following the execution of Well Programs, and reviewing and approving End-of-Well reports to ensure alignment with project objectives and operational standards.
- Review and approve detailed well operations procedures including Casing running and cementing, review and approve project well control briefing documentation, and assure Technical Integrity of Well Operations programs to maintain safe and compliant drilling and well execution across all rigs.
- Participate in the selection and evaluation of service companies, suppliers, and equipment; verify invoices for service companies; evaluate results versus goals and performance of service companies; and ensure that third-party deliverables meet project technical and cost expectations.
- Manage cost control of programs versus AFE by analyzing solutions, monitor daily cost/depth progress versus AFE, forecast and plan medium and long term needs to meet program requirements, and anticipate operational changes and needs while revising plans accordingly to maintain financial discipline and operational efficiency.
- Monitor daily Time/Depth progress, take active part in daily performance calls, review performance trends including NPT across all rigs, participate in well performance reviews to increase ft/day and reduce flat time, and initiate engineering corrective action to drive a process of continuous improvement.
- Initiate engineering studies to solve recurring problems including wellbore stability, lost circulation, and washouts, review new technology for possible application to the project, and take an active role in Drilling TIC projects as assigned to enhance operational effectiveness and technical innovation.
- Ensure compliance to IDS Standards and Procedures, review requests for exemptions to IDS Standards in QUEST, review SQ RIR's resulting from well operations in QUEST, participate in and lead SQ investigations, participate in HARC's, and review and approve Management of Change to well programs to maintain governance and risk management standards.
- Use InTouch for best practices, lessons learned, and technical alerts; ensure best practices and lessons learned are transferred between all rigs on a project; ensure proper communication with client, segments, and third parties; participate in Daily Morning Meetings; supervise and mentor junior Well Engineers; and deputize for the Project Manager as required to ensure seamless project execution and leadership continuity.
Experience & skills
- Demonstrate a minimum of 15 years experience in well engineering and well operations with comprehensive exposure to designing wells for a wide range of well types and different rig operations, and provide evidence of sustained technical contribution across multiple drilling projects.
- Exhibit advanced knowledge and practical application of Well Proposal development, Basis of Design preparation, Well Programs execution, and End-of-Well reports review and approval, ensuring full technical oversight from planning through post-well evaluation.
- Demonstrate proven capability in reviewing and approving well operations procedures including Casing running and cementing, assuring Technical Integrity of Well Operations programs, and conducting and approving project well control briefing activities in line with established operational standards.
- Show strong experience in cost control and financial oversight by managing programs versus AFE, monitoring daily cost/depth progress versus AFE, forecasting medium and long term program needs, and analyzing solutions to maintain budget compliance while meeting operational objectives.
- Provide demonstrated expertise in performance monitoring including daily Time/Depth monitoring, analysis of NPT trends across all rigs, participation in well performance reviews to increase ft/day and reduce flat time, and implementation of engineering corrective action for continuous improvement.
- Evidence hands-on involvement in engineering studies addressing recurring operational challenges such as wellbore stability, lost circulation, and washouts, along with active participation in Drilling TIC projects and evaluation of new technology for application to ongoing projects.
- Demonstrate working knowledge and application of IDS Standards and Procedures, QUEST systems including review of exemptions and SQ RIR's, participation and leadership in SQ investigations, involvement in HARC's, and structured Management of Change processes for well programs.
