Job description
The Deputy Head – Senior School (Teaching and Learning) at GEMS Wellington Academy – Al Khail is responsible for providing strategic leadership and operational oversight of teaching quality, curriculum development, and academic standards across Years 7–13 within the Senior School. As a member of the Senior Leadership Team, the postholder drives excellence in teaching and learning, ensures consistently high-quality classroom practice, and secures outstanding pupil outcomes aligned with the Academy’s vision. The role includes leading the development and implementation of the Teaching and Learning strategy, monitoring teaching quality through lesson observations, learning walks, and work scrutiny, and holding middle and senior leaders accountable for the consistent application of teaching principles and policy. The Deputy Head utilizes attainment and progress data to identify trends, inform interventions, and drive improvement, contributes to whole-school self-evaluation and school improvement planning, supports Internal Quality Assurance processes, and ensures high-quality assessment practices and consistent academic standards across subjects. The position oversees curriculum development, bespoke study skills programmes, integration of digital learning strategies, inclusion provision including ELL and students of determination, preparation of inspection documentation such as SEF, adherence to British curriculum frameworks and KHDA/BSO inspection standards, implementation of international benchmark assessments and UAE curriculum requirements, and contributes to recruitment, policy development, and strategic planning while modelling high-quality teaching practice and leading CPD initiatives.

Key responsibilities
- Lead the development and implementation of the Teaching and Learning strategy across the Senior School for Years 7–13
- Monitor and evaluate teaching quality through lesson observations, learning walks, and work scrutiny and hold leaders accountable for implementation of teaching principles and policy
- Analyse attainment and progress data to identify trends, inform targeted interventions, and drive measurable school improvement
- Support and lead Internal Quality Assurance processes and ensure consistent assessment practices and academic standards across subjects
- Contribute to whole-school self-evaluation, SEF preparation, and school improvement planning aligned to inspection standards
- Oversee the Celebration of Educational Excellence programme and monitor impact of initiatives on pupil progress and attainment
- Lead and deliver Teaching and Learning CPD, coordinate mentoring and coaching programmes, and promote reflective practice and continuous improvement
- Contribute to curriculum development and academic policy, refine the bespoke study skills programme, and integrate digital learning strategies effectively
- Collaborate with Inclusion, ELL, and academic support teams to ensure high-quality provision for all learners including students of determination
- Support implementation of international benchmark assessments and UAE curriculum requirements and undertake additional duties as requested by leadership
Experience & skills
- Proven strategic and operational leadership experience within a Senior School setting
- Strong understanding of teaching and learning frameworks, curriculum development, and data-driven improvement
- Deep understanding of British curriculum frameworks and inspection standards including KHDA and BSO
- Recognised teaching qualification such as PGCE or equivalent
- Bachelor’s degree in Education or related field
- Master’s degree or NPQ desirable
- Excellent communication, organisational, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to lead Internal Quality Assurance, assessment standardisation, and curriculum oversight processes
- Capability to analyse attainment and progress data to drive improvement initiatives
- UK-enhanced DBS or equivalent police check required
