Job description
The Construction Specialist (Trenching) role is responsible for supervising and executing nearshore and land-based trenching operations for pipeline installation and subsea infrastructure projects. The position ensures safe and efficient trenching execution aligned with project specifications, HSE standards, and schedule milestones. The specialist coordinates with subcontractors, marine teams, survey teams, and project management to ensure operational readiness and project success. The role also includes planning trenching activities, monitoring productivity, enforcing safety regulations, and ensuring technical and quality compliance throughout project execution. This is a field-based position requiring strong leadership, planning, and technical expertise in trenching and pipeline infrastructure construction.
Required skills
Key responsibilities
- Lead and supervise trenching operations across nearshore and land-based environments, ensuring that all excavation activities are conducted safely and efficiently. The Construction Specialist is responsible for coordinating equipment, manpower, and subcontractors while ensuring adherence to approved project procedures, specifications, and operational standards.
- Promote and enforce Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) standards across all trenching activities. This includes ensuring compliance with permit-to-work requirements, risk assessments, environmental controls, and safety guidelines while conducting regular inspections and implementing corrective actions where necessary.
- Plan and organize trenching activities by developing daily and weekly work schedules aligned with overall project timelines. The role requires careful consideration of constraints such as weather conditions, tidal movements, equipment availability, and marine access to ensure smooth project execution.
- Coordinate subcontractors and evaluate performance related to excavation, dredging, dewatering, shoring, backfilling, and corridor preparation. The Construction Specialist ensures subcontractor work meets project quality standards, schedule requirements, and safety guidelines.
- Monitor operational productivity, manpower utilization, and equipment efficiency. The role includes identifying deviations from planned performance, investigating operational challenges, and implementing corrective measures to maintain project progress and efficiency.
- Ensure technical accuracy of trenching work by verifying trench profiles, tolerances, and specifications. The specialist interfaces with survey teams and QA/QC personnel to confirm that trenching work meets engineering requirements before pipeline installation.
- Maintain effective communication with project stakeholders including field engineering teams, marine operations, logistics, and project management. The role involves participating in coordination meetings and providing updates on project progress, risks, and operational constraints.
- Engage with clients and project representatives to provide regular progress updates, address technical concerns, and ensure compliance with contractual requirements. The Construction Specialist plays a key role in maintaining client satisfaction and project delivery success.
Experience & skills
- Strong experience in nearshore and land-based trenching operations within pipeline installation or marine infrastructure projects. Candidates must demonstrate practical knowledge of excavation techniques, trenching equipment, and construction methodologies.
- Proven ability to supervise construction teams and manage subcontractors effectively in field environments. The role requires leadership skills, decision-making capabilities, and operational management experience.
- Solid understanding of Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) standards and compliance requirements within construction and offshore infrastructure projects. Candidates must demonstrate commitment to safety leadership.
- Experience in planning and scheduling trenching activities including resource allocation, equipment planning, and productivity monitoring. The role requires strong organizational and planning capabilities.
- Technical knowledge of soil conditions, trenching equipment, marine access requirements, and nearshore operational constraints. Candidates must be able to adapt trenching plans based on environmental and site conditions.
- Strong communication and coordination skills to work with multidisciplinary teams including marine operations, survey teams, engineering, and project management. The role requires collaboration across multiple stakeholders.
- Experience in quality control processes including verification of trench profiles, dimensions, and engineering tolerances. Candidates must demonstrate attention to detail and technical accuracy.
- Ability to work in field-based environments and manage operational challenges in dynamic construction sites. Candidates should demonstrate flexibility, problem-solving skills, and ability to work under project deadlines.
