Job description
The Coastal Engineer role at Mott MacDonald supports the delivery and development of high-profile coastal and maritime infrastructure projects across the UAE, KSA, and the wider Middle East. The position operates within a multidisciplinary land development team, collaborating with mobility, utilities, sustainability, environmental, and waste specialists to deliver resilient and future-ready coastal solutions. The role covers strategic masterplanning, detailed engineering analysis, and advanced numerical modelling for projects including breakwaters, harbors, marinas, shoreline protection, beach stabilization, and land reclamation. The Coastal Engineer undertakes met-ocean assessments, hydrodynamic and sediment transport modelling, prepares technical documentation and tender materials, applies international design standards, and supports business development and proposal activities while engaging directly with clients and regional project teams.
Required skills
Key responsibilities
- Deliver engineering analysis and design for recreational, commercial, and industrial coastal and maritime facilities
- Support business development activities and contribute to securing new project wins
- Prepare engineering calculations, technical reports, drawings, specifications, and tender documentation
- Undertake advanced numerical modelling including waves, hydrodynamics, sediment transport, and flushing using MIKE21 and Delft3D
- Conduct met-ocean assessments and statistical analysis of wind, waves, and water levels
- Coordinate multidisciplinary inputs across coastal and marine infrastructure projects
- Apply relevant international coastal and marine engineering standards
- Produce technical proposals and contribute to fee estimates
- Communicate effectively with clients, partners, and internal project teams
- Travel within the region to support client engagement and project delivery
Experience & skills
- Hold a Bachelor’s degree in Marine Engineering, Coastal Engineering, or Civil Engineering
- Possess a minimum of 5 years of experience delivering coastal or marine projects in the UAE or Middle East
- Demonstrate strong experience designing coastal structures including breakwaters, marinas, beaches, quay walls, intakes, outfalls, and reclamation works
- Exhibit expertise in numerical modelling and met-ocean analysis
- Be chartered or actively working toward chartered engineer status
- Demonstrate strong technical reporting and communication skills
- Show commercial awareness with ability to work within project budgets and programmes
