Job description
GEMS Al Barsha National School seeks an experienced, passionate Head of Mathematics to lead a high-performing department from August 2026, within a British curriculum school that integrates the National Curriculum for England with UAE national values, culture, and identity. The role provides strategic and academic leadership across all phases of Mathematics, modelling outstanding classroom practice, setting high expectations for pedagogy, assessment, and outcomes, and driving continuous improvement through curriculum design, assessment strategies, and data-driven decision-making. The Head of Mathematics mentors and develops teachers via coaching, feedback, and professional learning; oversees assessment policies and rigorous analysis of attainment and progress; fosters a culture of curiosity, problem-solving, and mathematical confidence; promotes mathematics through enrichment, competitions, and co-curricular activities; ensures effective communication with parents, colleagues, and senior leadership for robust progress tracking and reporting; and upholds GEMS Educationās Core Values while contributing to the wider life of the school and community engagement.

Key responsibilities
- Provide strategic and academic leadership for the Mathematics department aligned to whole-school goals and the National Curriculum for England
- Model outstanding teaching and learning, setting high expectations for pedagogy, assessment, and student outcomes
- Oversee curriculum development, assessment policies, and data analysis to drive continuous improvement across all phases
- Support, mentor, and develop teachers through coaching, feedback, and targeted professional development
- Foster a collaborative team culture that encourages innovation and reflective practice
- Use assessment data to identify areas for improvement and to support personalised learning interventions
- Promote a love of Mathematics through enrichment, competitions, and co-curricular initiatives
- Communicate effectively with parents, colleagues, and school leadership to ensure robust progress tracking and reporting
- Uphold GEMS Educationās Core Values and contribute to wider school leadership, events, and community engagement
Experience & skills
- Bachelorās degree in Mathematics or a closely related field plus a recognised teaching qualification/licence (PGCE, QTS, or equivalent)
- Deep understanding of the National Curriculum for England and effective Mathematics pedagogy
- Strong knowledge of data analysis, curriculum planning, and assessment for learning
- Minimum of five yearsā Mathematics teaching experience including leadership experience within a department or key stage
- Experience in an international or British curriculum school (highly desirable)
- Proven track record of raising standards and achieving excellent student outcomes
- Commitment to safeguarding; UK-enhanced DBS or equivalent police check required for appointment
