Job description
ADVANCED CONCEPTS, an EDGE Group entity in Abu Dhabi, is developing unmanned aerial systems, loitering munitions, cruise missiles and guided artillery munitions, and every one of them depends on reliable data-links. This Senior Engineer writes the embedded software behind those links, implementing OSI PHY/layer 1 and layer 2 radio on microcontrollers or FPGAs. Work moves between bare-metal firmware and RTOS on ARM Cortex-M parts, device drivers for RF chipsets, and Linux drivers and kernel modules for custom hardware. Interfaces include I2C, UART, SPI, CAN and Ethernet, plus UDP and TCP client/server code on Linux. Board Support Packages and Yocto Linux images are built in-house. Performance tuning focuses on throughput, latency, power consumption and signal quality. Code goes through reviews and version control in Git or SVN, and hardware and software testing are part of the job. Junior engineers will look to you for guidance. Candidates need a Bachelor's or Master's in computer science, communication, electronic or software engineering, at least 8 years in embedded C, C++ and Assembler, and a solid grasp of RF principles including modulation, coding and signal processing.
Required skills
Key responsibilities
- Implement OSI PHY/layer 1 and layer 2 radio running on microcontrollers or FPGAs
- Develop embedded software for RF systems, including signal processing for data-links
- Write device drivers and low-level software for RF chipsets and modules
- Maintain bare-metal firmware for ARM Cortex-M microcontrollers
- Create RTOS-based firmware for microcontrollers
- Integrate I2C, UART, SPI, CAN and Ethernet in Linux and microcontroller environments
- Design and generate Board Support Packages
- Build Linux images using Yocto and FreeRTOS
- Code Linux drivers and kernel modules for custom hardware components
- Program Linux client/server applications over UDP, TCP and IP
- Optimise RF system throughput, latency, power consumption and signal quality
- Review code and enforce established coding standards and style guides
- Test and troubleshoot both software and hardware
- Mentor junior engineers and share technical knowledge
- Follow advances in embedded technologies and best practice
