Job description
The Project Lead Engineer – System 800xA role at ABB is a senior technical leadership position within the Projects and Services function of PAEN in Qatar, reporting to the Project Manager. The role acts as the technical lead for all engineering activities on assigned projects, ensuring execution across all engineering disciplines in an efficient and cost-effective manner. The position serves as a design authority for specific engineering disciplines, with responsibility for technical validation of design solutions in medium and complex projects. The role focuses on System 800xA–based integrated control and safety systems (ICSS), including AC800M, AC800M HI, Infi90, Symphony, and Symphony Plus platforms, supporting industries such as Oil & Gas, Power & Water. Responsibilities span project installation, commissioning, system application development, hardware and software engineering, industrial networking, cybersecurity implementation, and operational support, including offshore installed base environments. The role involves leading small multidisciplinary engineering teams, coordinating in-house and outsourced resources, supporting service and major projects, ensuring effective utilization of service contracts, and delivering customer training, while aligning with ABB’s advanced service and digital portfolio.

Key responsibilities
- Act as technical lead for all engineering activities within assigned projects, ensuring efficient and cost-effective execution across engineering disciplines
- Serve as design authority for designated engineering disciplines and complete corresponding engineering assignments
- Collaborate on project installation, commissioning, and site activities to identify issues and provide solutions to rectify engineering errors
- Lead, supervise, and coordinate multidisciplinary engineering teams of less than 10 members, including in-house and outsourced resources
- Coach project engineers and designers on translating conceptual designs into engineering documentation including modelling, prototyping, simulation, and calculations
- Apply design thinking and design for excellence concepts across projects
- Render technical validation of design solutions for medium and complex System 800xA-based projects
- Execute hands-on engineering activities related to System 800xA-based control systems including hardware and software application development
- Perform system installation, maintenance, and commissioning activities including offshore installed base support
- Implement and assess cybersecurity solutions for System 800xA systems including audits and assessments
- Configure and manage industrial networks and network switches
- Utilize service contracts effectively while working on service and major projects
- Deliver technical training to customers as required
Experience & skills
- Hold a graduate engineering degree in Electrical, Electronic, or Instrumentation Engineering
- Demonstrate a minimum of 12 years of professional experience, including at least 8 years as a customer support, project, or service engineer on System 800xA-based systems
- Exhibit strong hands-on experience as Project Lead Engineer for System 800xA-based control systems covering both hardware and software
- Demonstrate extensive experience with AC800M, AC800M HI, Infi90, Symphony, and Symphony Plus systems
- Possess experience in Oil & Gas and Power & Water industry environments
- Demonstrate hands-on experience in system installation, commissioning, and maintenance
- Demonstrate experience with industrial networking, network switch configuration, and industrial communication protocols such as Modbus RTU, Modbus TCP, and OPC
- Exhibit hands-on experience in cybersecurity implementation, audits, and assessments for industrial control systems
- Demonstrate experience working in service projects, major projects, and offshore installed base environments
- Demonstrate capability to lead virtual teams of 5 to 10 engineers without line management responsibility
