Job description
The Lead Project Engineer at Wood, based in Abu Dhabi, plays a key leadership role in coordinating and managing engineering teams across multidiscipline projects for high-profile clients in the oil, gas, and new energies sector. The position is part of Woodâs global engineering management organization, known for delivering complex projects for major energy companies worldwide. The role oversees the planning, execution, and completion of technical projects, ensuring alignment with contractual, technical, and quality requirements. The Lead Project Engineer prepares discipline design instructions, manpower plans, and contract requisition scopes; interfaces with discipline managers for resource allocation; and ensures adherence to HSE, quality, and project assurance systems. Responsibilities include managing schedules, resolving delays, implementing recovery plans, leading design verification and risk mitigation activities, and ensuring customer satisfaction through proactive communication and delivery excellence. The position also requires strong people management skills to supervise interdisciplinary teams of 50+ professionals, driving collaboration and accountability. The role demands extensive experience in gas processing EPC/EPCm projects, a deep understanding of technical and commercial project aspects, and the ability to lead project execution with consistency, safety, and innovation. Key responsibilities
- Lead and coordinate multidisciplinary engineering teams to ensure successful project delivery
- Oversee and manage engineering inputs and deliverables across multiple execution centers including high-value engineering centers
- Prepare Discipline Design Instructions and Project Engineering Manpower Plans
- Interface with discipline managers to allocate and manage engineering resources effectively
- Develop multidiscipline contract requisition scopes and ensure proper documentation
- Implement work plans for inter-discipline interfaces, identifying key milestones and deliverables
- Ensure compliance with HSE, Quality, and Project Assurance systems throughout project lifecycle
- Drive design verification activities and risk mitigation planning for project execution
- Monitor progress, identify delays, and implement recovery or corrective action plans
- Use conditions of contract to support decisions on schedules, milestones, and change management processes
- Quantify and manage effects of project changes, developing mitigation plans to ensure continuity
- Lead and mentor technical professionals, checking work and ensuring quality deliverables
- Coordinate communication across large interdisciplinary teams and provide leadership through effective engagement and motivation
- Ensure project procedures, specifications, and standards are followed and consistently applied
- Manage technical interfaces with third parties and ensure customer satisfaction through proactive support and delivery excellence
Experience & skills
- Hold a Bachelorâs degree in Mechanical Engineering
- Possess approximately 15 years of experience in a project delivery environment, including leadership in engineering management
- Demonstrate proven experience in mega gas processing EPC/EPCm projects
- Have deep understanding of technical work scopes and commercial project management aspects
- Be proficient in applying contract conditions to decision-making for schedules and key milestones
- Exhibit strong knowledge of specifications, standards, and project execution workflows
- Demonstrate leadership capability in managing multidisciplinary engineering teams (50+ professionals)
- Possess effective communication, motivation, and public speaking skills for team coordination and client interaction
- Show ability to manage technical interfaces, performance metrics, and team development in alignment with organizational goals
