Job description
OQ Refineries and Petroleum is hiring a Senior Engineer Control Systems (RPI) in Suhar, Oman to join the Assets Management – E&I Central Support – Control System function. This role is responsible for designing, analyzing, implementing, and maintaining refinery control systems across distillation, cracking, and blending processes. The position ensures the availability and reliability of the Distributed Control System (DCS), Emergency Shutdown System (ESD), and PLC-based loops, while leading automation projects, system upgrades, and troubleshooting activities. Responsibilities include developing system architectures, control algorithms, PLC programs, DCS configurations, HMI designs, and integrating plant systems with SCADA, historians, and ERP platforms. The engineer will supervise system testing, commissioning, and lifecycle planning, ensuring compliance with functional safety standards such as IEC 61511. The role requires strong collaboration with operations, maintenance, safety, IT/ICS cybersecurity teams, contractors, and vendors. The position provides mentorship to junior engineers and ensures operational excellence, process safety, and compliance with HSE and QA/QC standards.

Key responsibilities
- Design, analyze, implement, and maintain control systems for refinery processes including distillation, cracking, and blending
- Ensure availability and performance of DCS, ESD, and PLC-based control loops
- Troubleshoot DCS and PLC systems, including hardware, software, and communication issues
- Provide day-to-day operations support including updates to DCS graphics, control schemes, and logic functions
- Lead control system projects, including upgrades, replacements, and automation initiatives
- Develop and manage lifecycle plans for control systems
- Develop templates, standards, and guidelines for control system design and maintenance
- Collaborate with IT/ICS teams on cybersecurity initiatives for industrial control systems
- Program PLCs using ladder logic, FBD, or structured text
- Configure DCS platforms and program centralized process monitoring systems
- Develop HMI interfaces for operator interaction with control systems
- Integrate control systems with SCADA, data historians, and ERP
- Conduct testing, functional verification, and commissioning of control systems
- Perform root cause analysis and corrective actions for control system failures
- Ensure compliance with safety standards including IEC 61511 and implement safety instrumented systems
- Collaborate with operations, maintenance, engineering, safety, and environmental teams
- Supervise vendor and contractor activities during control system projects
- Provide mentorship and guidance to junior engineers and technicians
- Prepare technical documentation, maintenance instructions, and reports
- Ensure adherence to HSE, QA/QC standards, and Management of Change (MOC) procedures
Experience & skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Electronic, Instrumentation Engineering, or similar
- 8+ years of experience in refinery or petrochemical plant control systems maintenance and engineering
- Proven experience with DCS, ESD, and PLC systems
- Knowledge of refinery processes, plant equipment, and control system applications
- Experience in developing and reviewing maintenance work instructions
- Proficiency in process automation protocols such as HART, Profibus, SDS
- Strong technical judgment and analytical problem-solving skills
- Experience in safety management, QA/QC, and HSE compliance
- Computer literacy including MS Office and simulation/modeling tools
- Fluent in English (Arabic desirable)
- Strong documentation and reporting skills
- Experience collaborating with vendors, contractors, and multidisciplinary teams
- Proven track record in project execution and operational readiness
