Job description
Wood is recruiting for a Senior Piping Designer to join its UAE Business Unit on a full-time office-based role in Sharjah, UAE, working a 5/2 schedule and focusing on the preparation and checking of all types of Piping or Layout design deliverables for a Major Onshore Brownfield Project. The position supports a general engineering contract awarded to Wood to help an International Client operator deliver a portfolio of onshore capital projects by providing engineering and project management services (including EPC contract management), as well as Supply Chain, Construction and Commissioning support from Wood Iraq and UAE offices. Projects span Greenfield and Brownfield modifications and integrate low-carbon solutions aligned with energy transition and emissions reduction goals. Key objectives include promoting safe behavior at all times; performing site surveys and data gathering; delivering discipline-specific design and drafting services compliant with project, statutory, and regulatory requirements; and providing technical support to site during design, engineering, and construction. Core deliverables include General Arrangement Drawings, Mechanical Package Drawings, 3D Models in PDS, Piping Arrangement Drawings, Piping Isometrics, Material Take-Offs, and electrical/instrument cable layouts; interdisciplinary checks across Civil/Structural/Piping/Mechanical/Electrical/Instrumentation drawings; vendor drawing reviews for Equipment/Package items; production of 2D drawings in AutoCAD and MicroStation; coordination of discipline activities; and preparation of model/constructability review presentations. Technical skills required include proficiency in AutoCAD, MicroStation, Excel, Word and PowerPoint; 3D modelling using PDS; 3D model review with Navisworks; use of Laser Scan Data in a PDS environment; understanding and interpretation of Topographical Surveys; ability to conduct onshore site surveys; working to agreed scope, budget and schedule; strong safety commitment; experience across Brownfield, Conceptual, FEED and Detailed Design; preparation and coordination of Mechanical and/or Piping design deliverables; compliance with industry, international and client Codes and Standards; and maintaining suitable records for auditing. Expected qualifications include a Diploma or HNC in Mechanical Engineering (or relevant subject), minimum 10 years of relevant experience, experience in FEED, Brownfield and Upstream Oil, E3D experience (required), experience in site survey activities and techniques, with previous Wood and Middle East experience preferred. Key responsibilities
- Promote safe behavior at all times across design, review, and site activities
- Perform site surveys and data gathering at project locations to inform design
- Provide discipline-specific piping/layout design and drafting services meeting project and regulatory requirements
- Prepare and check GA drawings, Mechanical Package Drawings, 3D Models in PDS, Piping Arrangement Drawings, Piping Isometrics, MTOs, and electrical/instrument cable layouts
- Conduct interdisciplinary checks of Civil, Structural, Piping, Mechanical, Electrical, and Instrumentation drawings
- Review vendor drawings for equipment and packaged items and provide coordinated comments
- Produce high-quality 2D deliverables using AutoCAD and MicroStation
- Assist in coordinating discipline activities and interfaces with other functions
- Prepare and deliver model and constructability review presentations
- Use Navisworks for 3D model reviews and integrate Laser Scan Data within PDS workflows
- Interpret Topographical Surveys to inform layout and routing decisions
- Support the site team with technical guidance during design, engineering, and construction
- Work to agreed scope, budget, and schedule while maintaining quality and safety standards
- Ensure compliance with industry, international, and client Codes and Standards
- Maintain records of correspondence and completed work for auditing and reference purposes
Experience & skills
- Hold a Diploma or HNC in Mechanical Engineering (or relevant subject)
- Possess a minimum of 10 years of relevant experience
- Demonstrate experience in FEED, Brownfield, and Upstream Oil projects
- Show E3D experience (required)
- Be proficient in AutoCAD, MicroStation, PDS, and Navisworks
- Demonstrate ability to use Laser Scan Data in a PDS environment
- Understand and interpret Topographical Surveys and conduct onshore site surveys
- Have experience preparing and coordinating Mechanical and/or Piping design deliverables
- Exhibit thorough awareness of international codes and standards for Mechanical/Piping design in Oil & Gas
- Demonstrate a strong commitment to safety and continuous improvement in plant design and operation
- Bring extensive experience with prefabricated, packaged plant design
- Be able to work to agreed scope, budget, and schedule and coordinate with multi-discipline teams
- Previous experience with Wood preferred; experience in the Middle East is an advantage
