Job description
The Planning Engineer at Wood, based in Abu Dhabi within the Oil, Gas & New Energies business, is responsible for developing, maintaining, and controlling project schedules and plans aligned with approved Work Breakdown Structures (WBS) and contractual requirements. The role ensures that project timelines, resource allocations, and milestone achievements are accurately tracked and reported throughout the project lifecycle. This includes coordinating with engineering, procurement, construction, and third-party stakeholders to monitor activities, assess schedule impacts, and forecast manpower requirements. The Planning Engineer produces detailed progress and performance reports, updates project plans and manpower schedules, and conducts schedule risk analyses to support proactive project management. The position also contributes to mentoring junior planning personnel and ensuring adherence to project control procedures and continuous improvement initiatives. Key responsibilities
- Develop and maintain project planning control structures aligned with approved Work Breakdown Structures (WBS)
- Create and update baseline project schedules using Primavera and related scheduling tools
- Monitor and control planning activities through all phases of the project lifecycle
- Coordinate with engineering, procurement, construction, and third-party teams to maintain project awareness and schedule accuracy
- Prepare and issue project plans, progress reports, and performance status reports in accordance with reporting requirements
- Update project schedules and manpower forecasts regularly, reflecting actual progress and anticipated changes
- Assess schedule impacts arising from change notifications and communicate to project stakeholders
- Monitor progress against milestones, evaluate performance, and identify deviations from planned targets
- Conduct schedule risk analysis and participate in project controls compliance and continuous improvement reviews
- Collaborate with cost control teams to ensure accurate forecasting of man-hour budgets and integration of change impacts
- Ensure all project schedules are logic-linked, display critical paths, and are fully resource-loaded in line with corporate standards
- Mentor and support junior planning engineers to develop professional scheduling and reporting competencies
Experience & skills
- Bachelorâs degree in any Engineering discipline
- Minimum of 5 years of relevant scheduling and planning experience within the oil, gas, or energy sector
- Proficient knowledge of Primavera and related scheduling software including logic and CPM analysis, resource loading, and levelling
- Strong understanding of Work Breakdown Structures (WBS), Cost Breakdown Structures (CBS), and project reporting frameworks
- Proficiency in earned value management, cost and schedule variance analysis, and what-if scenario planning
- Detailed knowledge of project management principles, cost control, planning, and risk analysis
- Ability to develop detailed project schedules, progress reports, resource plans, and staffing forecasts
- Strong analytical, communication, and organizational skills, with commitment to project controls compliance and improvement
