Job description
The Group Lead Engineer (Frontend) for the Retail Banking Groupâs Digital DBC Transformation is responsible for delivering and maintaining IT applications and services that enable next-generation digital experiences, driving the design, development, and delivery of intelligent, scalable, and secure user interfaces that integrate with AI and LLM-powered backend systems. The role governs engineers across countries within the squadâs scope, maintains a helicopter view to set priorities, creates and maintains the squadâs technical knowledge base, sets and enhances coding rules, writes tutorials and provides training, and continuously improves their own and the teamâs code. Core duties include consulting on functional and non-functional requirements; designing, building, and testing IT products (functional, performance, resilience, and security tests) with automation; unit testing; improving Continuous Delivery; setting up environments; deploying on infrastructure; implementing required changes; and setting up monitoring of product usage. The Lead Engineer designs and delivers intuitive, responsive, and intelligent UIs that leverage Large Language Models for dynamic content generation, contextual assistance, and real-time interactions; collaborates with backend and AI teams to integrate LLM APIs and inference pipelines; implements UI-level guardrails for responsible AI (user consent flows, moderation alerts, fallback messaging, transparency indicators); ensures compliance with AI governance and regulatory standards via explainable and trustworthy UX patterns; leads development of conversational interfaces (chat, voice, visual prompts) and supports multimodal input/output for accessibility; optimizes performance for AI-heavy applications (low latency, efficient rendering) using caching, streaming, and progressive rendering strategies; ensures secure handling of user inputs and AI outputs (masking sensitive data, preventing prompt injection and misuse) while collaborating with security to uphold data protection and privacy; translates complex AI functionalities into user-friendly interfaces; mentors global frontend teams, establishes coding standards, and leads code reviews focused on scalable AI integration; and works in agile/scrum with grooming, planning, TDD, test automation, debugging, profiling, configuration management, version control, and full CD (compile, build, package, deploy) while maintaining traceability of testing activities.

Key responsibilities
- Govern engineers across countries within the squadâs scope and set coding standards, best practices, and priorities to achieve reusable, optimized, testable, readable, and performant code.
- Consult with Product Owner, Chapter Lead, and Principal Engineers to define and deliver functional and non-functional requirements for frontend products.
- Design, build, unit test, and automate functional, performance, resilience, and security tests for frontend applications; improve the Continuous Delivery process.
- Set up environments, deploy products on the target infrastructure, implement required changes, and establish monitoring of customer usage.
- Design and deliver responsive, accessible, and intelligent UIs that leverage LLMs for dynamic content generation, contextual assistance, and real-time interactions across web and mobile.
- Integrate LLM APIs and inference pipelines with frontend workflows in collaboration with backend and AI/ML teams, ensuring low-latency, efficient rendering with caching, streaming, and progressive strategies.
- Implement frontend-level AI guardrails including user consent flows, moderation alerts, fallback messaging, transparency indicators, and prevention of prompt injection or misuse.
- Ensure compliance with AI governance and regulatory requirements through explainable UI/UX patterns that promote transparency, trust, and user control.
- Lead development of conversational interfaces (chat, voice, visual prompts) and support multimodal input/output for inclusivity across platforms.
- Apply performance optimization and security best practices for web and mobile applications, including input sanitization and secure session handling.
- Collaborate closely with designers, SMEs, and product teams during story grooming and planning, meeting sprint commitments and contributing to agile processes.
- Mentor global frontend teams, drive architectural decisions, lead code reviews, and author tutorials and internal knowledge to elevate engineering excellence.
Experience & skills
- At least 10 years of software development experience working in Agile teams, with excellent programming/coding skills and communication/presentation abilities.
- Excellent working knowledge of web technologies (HTML/CSS) and modern frontend JavaScript/CSS frameworks such as ReactJS, TailwindCSS, and NextJs.
- Excellent working knowledge of mobile technologies with React Native and sound knowledge of iOS and Android; well-versed in either Java/Kotlin or Swift.
- Deep understanding of CI/CD for the frontend stack using Azure DevOps or Jenkins, with experience in continuous deployment and highly scalable applications.
- Strong performance optimization practices for web and mobile, with infrastructure knowledge including RESTful APIs, Single Sign-On, LDAP, and search/API technologies (Apigee, GraphQL, Swagger, Elasticsearch, Kibana, auth0).
- Experience with DevOps, Docker, and infrastructure as code; familiarity with unit testing frameworks such as Jest or Mocha; knowledge of TDD, continuous integration, debugging, profiling, configuration management, and version control.
- Proven experience integrating Large Language Models into frontend applications (prompt engineering, token management, streaming responses) using platforms such as OpenAI, Azure OpenAI, Anthropic, or Hugging Face.
- Ability to implement frontend-level AI guardrails and design explainable AI interfaces; understanding of AI governance, bias mitigation, and compliance (e.g., GDPR, UAE AI Ethics) from a UI/UX perspective.
- Experience building chatbot UIs, voice-enabled, or multimodal experiences; familiarity with platforms like Kore.AI or Dialogflow for conversational orchestration.
- Demonstrated leadership of global frontend teams, driving architectural decisions, enforcing coding standards, and collaborating with backend, AI/ML, product, and design to align with business goals and technical roadmaps.
