Job description
The Lead Cost Engineer is responsible for overseeing the cost function and commercial project-related activities, ensuring all operations comply with company policies and HSEQ standards. The role includes leadership of the cost team, facilitating effective communication with key stakeholders, and managing project budgets, cost forecasts, and cash flow. The Lead Cost Engineer prepares budget breakdowns from Project Estimate Documents, maintains Oracle systems for cost tracking and reporting, and initiates invoicing aligned with contract milestones. The position requires monitoring and assessing the financial impact of project changes, compiling contract cost reports including VOWD, Forecast to Go, and Estimate at Completion, and providing variance analysis and commentary. The role involves liaising with Engineering, Procurement, and Construction teams, facilitating project cost performance meetings, managing project close-outs, and presenting commercial reports to senior management. The Lead Cost Engineer is expected to enforce continuous improvement, promote best practices, maintain information security compliance, and lead a diverse multinational team across multiple project sites.

Key responsibilities
- Oversee the cost function and CRM support team, ensuring timely delivery of all cost function deliverables and adherence to company processes
- Facilitate effective communication between the cost function and key project stakeholders, ensuring alignment with project objectives
- Prepare project budgets from Project Estimate Documents, review with project teams, and upload into financial tracking systems such as Compass
- Maintain Oracle systems for cost tracking, reporting, and support Finance in monitoring payments, cash flow, and deviations from planned budgets
- Estimate and assess the financial impact of project changes, monitor actual costs, and compile contract cost reports including VOWD, Forecast to Go, and Estimate at Completion with meaningful commentary
- Liaise with Engineering, Procurement, Construction, and other functions to monitor activities affecting budgets and phased cost forecasts
- Facilitate and chair internal project cost performance meetings, lead project cost close-out processes, and ensure accurate commercial reporting during project reviews
- Provide updated project budgets and revenue projections for business unit forecasts, prepare commercial slides, and attend client project control meetings
- Lead, mentor, and manage the Cost Team, including performance management, competency assessments, absence management, and overall well-being
- Promote continuous improvement within the cost team, ensure compliance with HSEQ policies, and maintain adherence to information security procedures
- Demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills, representing the cost function professionally to internal and external stakeholders
- Ensure alignment with company and client core values, supporting effective project execution and risk management
Experience & skills
- Minimum 8 years of experience, preferably in major oil and gas projects, with at least 3 years as a Lead Cost Engineer
- Bachelorβs degree in Quantity Surveying, Engineering, or related field
- Proficiency in advanced Excel, cost estimation, and risk analysis software
- Strong understanding of project execution processes and ability to interpret contract terms, conditions, and specifications
- In-depth knowledge of total cost management techniques and cost engineering principles
- Experience managing budgets, cash flow, cost tracking, reporting, and variance analysis
- Proven ability to lead and manage a diverse, multinational team across multiple project locations
- Strong communication, stakeholder engagement, and presentation skills for senior management reporting
- Commitment to HSEQ compliance, company and client core values, and continuous improvement initiatives
- Ability to prepare commercial presentations, attend client project control meetings, and manage cost close-outs effectively
