Job description
The Head of Middle School role at GEMS New Millennium School – Al Khail is a senior academic leadership position responsible for providing strategic direction and operational oversight for the Middle School phase. The role ensures high-quality teaching and learning across all subjects, effective use of resources, and continuous improvement in student achievement aligned with GEMS Core Values. The position carries overall accountability for student discipline, pastoral care, curriculum continuity, staff management, budget oversight, and professional development. The Head of Middle School evaluates teaching effectiveness, sets performance priorities and targets, leads self-evaluation processes, supports curriculum enrichment, and promotes student well-being in academic and co-curricular areas while ensuring compliance with UAE inspection frameworks and safeguarding requirements.
Required skills
Key responsibilities
- Provide leadership and management of the Middle School to ensure high-quality teaching and learning across all subjects
- Ensure effective use of resources and improved standards of student achievement
- Oversee student discipline and pastoral care and liaise with teachers and parents as required
- Manage Middle School budgets and undertake teaching and professional duties
- Work with supervisors, Heads of Department, and coordinators to ensure curriculum continuity and progression
- Promote and uphold the ethos and standards defined by GEMS Core Values
- Evaluate the effectiveness of teaching and learning and provide guidance and support to staff
- Set priorities, targets, and performance expectations for team members
- Act as the first point of contact for Middle School teaching staff regarding student academic and well-being matters
- Lead and contribute to subject self-evaluation processes and implementation of improvement actions
- Ensure effective management of teaching staff, resources, and professional development
- Coordinate professional learning and development initiatives
- Support curriculum enrichment and enhancement of student learning skills
- Contribute beyond standard working hours when required for school events and activities
- Ensure compliance with safeguarding standards and inspection requirements
Experience & skills
- Hold a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in any subject area
- Demonstrate strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills
- Exhibit proven experience with curriculum design and assessment standards
- Demonstrate commitment to fostering a positive learning environment and continuous professional growth
- Exhibit strong knowledge of the UAE inspection framework
- Demonstrate outstanding classroom practice and academic leadership capability
- Meet safeguarding requirements including a UK-enhanced DBS or equivalent police clearance
