Job description
The Head of Department – English at Our Own English High School – Al Ain is a senior academic leadership role responsible for leading, managing, and delivering exceptional standards of English teaching and learning within a world-class school environment under GEMS Education. The role requires an experienced Teacher of English who is passionate about education and committed to creating an engaging, inspiring, and student-centered learning environment. The position focuses on delivering a dynamic and creative English curriculum to motivated students, ensuring outstanding teaching practices, high academic achievement, and continuous improvement across the department. The successful candidate will demonstrate exceptional subject knowledge, a proven track record of outstanding teaching and learning, and the ability to integrate effective teaching methodologies with modern educational technology and IT skills. The role operates within the UAE education context, where prior teaching experience in the UAE is considered an added advantage. The position requires adherence to strict safeguarding standards, including holding or obtaining a UK-enhanced DBS or equivalent police clearance, and supports GEMS Education’s commitment to student welfare, staff welfare, and Emiratization goals by encouraging applications from UAE nationals. Candidates who can join on short notice are given preference.

Key responsibilities
- Lead, manage, and oversee the English department to ensure consistently high standards of teaching, learning, and student achievement
- Create, implement, and sustain an engaging and inspiring learning environment that promotes academic excellence in English
- Deliver and monitor a dynamic, creative, and high-quality English curriculum aligned with school and GEMS Education standards
- Ensure outstanding classroom practice through effective lesson planning, assessment, and feedback mechanisms
- Support, guide, and uphold safeguarding and student welfare practices in line with GEMS Education and regulatory requirements
- Utilize educational technology and IT tools to enhance teaching, learning, and curriculum delivery within the department
Experience & skills
- Hold a Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in English or the subject taught along with a certified teaching qualification such as B.Ed. or equivalent
- Demonstrate a proven and consistent track record of outstanding teaching and learning outcomes
- Possess exceptional subject knowledge in English with strong communication and presentation skills
- Exhibit exceptional IT skills relevant to modern classroom and curriculum delivery
- Have prior teaching experience in the UAE as an added advantage
- Be able to provide or obtain a UK-enhanced DBS or equivalent police clearance as a mandatory safeguarding requirement
- Be available to join on short notice, which is considered a preferred criterion
- Be aligned with and supportive of the UAE’s Emiratization goals, with applications from UAE nationals encouraged
