Job description
The Head of Modern Foreign Languages (Senior School) role at the British International School Riyadh (BISR), Al Waha Campus, is a permanent, full-time leadership position commencing in August 2026. BISR is a not-for-profit, co-educational British international school serving students aged 3–18 and delivering the English National Curriculum enriched by local and international contexts. Accredited by the Council of International Schools and recognised as a British School Overseas, BISR is also a member of BSME, AoBSO, HMC, and COBIS. The role combines departmental leadership with teaching responsibilities for students aged 11–18 and is central to driving excellence in Modern Foreign Languages education while contributing to the school’s strategic pillars of learning, enrichment, and well-being. The Head of MFL provides strong curriculum leadership, ensures high-quality teaching and assessment practices, supports holistic student development in an intercultural environment, contributes to co-curricular programs and community events, and fully upholds the school’s Mission, Vision, Motto, and safeguarding responsibilities. The position requires deep understanding of the English National Curriculum, experience with diverse and second-language learners, and commitment to pastoral care, professional development, and safeguarding within an international school setting.

Key responsibilities
- Lead and manage the Modern Foreign Languages department within the Senior School for students aged 11–18
- Deliver high-quality teaching within the Modern Foreign Languages curriculum alongside leadership responsibilities
- Drive curriculum development, monitoring, and assessment in line with the English National Curriculum
- Ensure high-quality assessment and feedback strategies that enable students to make strong academic progress
- Create a positive climate for learning that supports student well-being and holistic development in an intercultural context
- Support and contribute to the school’s strategic pillars of learning, enrichment, and well-being
- Demonstrate strong pastoral care and support student welfare across the department
- Collaborate effectively with colleagues and contribute to whole-school initiatives and improvement planning
- Contribute to the wider life of the school including co-curricular programs, enrichment activities, and community events
- Fully support and promote the school’s Mission, Vision, Motto, and safeguarding commitments
- Ensure compliance with safeguarding policies and participate in required background and safer recruitment checks
Experience & skills
- Hold Qualified Teacher Status with a PGCE or B.Ed. or equivalent UK-recognised teaching qualification
- Demonstrate a minimum of 2 years of relevant teaching and leadership experience
- Show detailed knowledge of the English National Curriculum and Modern Foreign Languages education
- Demonstrate experience in curriculum development, assessment, and monitoring
- Exhibit experience teaching diverse learners, including second language students or willingness to undertake training
- Demonstrate strong classroom practice, positive behavior management, and pastoral care
- Show commitment to co-curricular life, student well-being, and holistic education
- Demonstrate strong ICT skills and effective use of assessment for learning strategies
- Exhibit strong communication, organization, collaboration, and time management skills
