Job description
The Engineer – Process Metallurgy (Steel Melting Plant) is responsible for supporting all aspects of metallurgical testing, investigation, and process optimization within the steelmaking operations. The role involves in-depth review and analysis of the steelmaking process through Level 2 (L2) systems to identify deviations from standard procedures that may result in casting defects or quality issues. The engineer evaluates operational data from Electric Arc Furnace (EAF), Ladle Refining Furnace (LRF), and Continuous Casting Machine (CCM) processes to improve plant efficiency, product quality, production output, maintenance performance, and safety standards. This position requires strong analytical capabilities, deep knowledge of ferrous metallurgy, and hands-on experience in steel plant environments to ensure continuous process improvement and delivery of high-quality steel products.
Required skills
Key responsibilities
- Set and control chemical compositions for various steel grades while optimizing mechanical properties in relation to chemistry, rolling temperature, and cooling patterns to meet product specifications
- Analyze operational and quality performance data from EAF, LRF, and CCM processes, conduct statistical evaluations, identify root causes of casting defects or failures, and implement corrective and preventive actions
- Review and validate inspection plans and testing procedures periodically to ensure their effectiveness in achieving intended metallurgical and quality outcomes
- Provide technical and metallurgical leadership to Mechanical Property Testing and Metallographic Laboratories, including supervision, budget management, and evaluation of new testing equipment and methodologies
- Support new product development initiatives by designing and developing metallurgical products and processes in collaboration with the metallurgy team, and provide technical assistance to steel melting shop, rolling mill, sales, and marketing functions
- Manage customer complaint investigations through detailed failure analysis and root cause determination, ensure timely technical resolutions, drive quality assurance, and contribute to national workforce development and research initiatives related to new processes and products
Experience & skills
- Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Metallurgy with strong emphasis on ferrous metallurgy; additional certifications in Metallurgy and Quality Management are preferred
- Minimum 10 years of hands-on experience in steelmaking metallurgy as a process engineer within steel melting plants, including exposure to EAF, LRF, and CCM operations
- Proven expertise in metallurgy and quality control, process control systems (including L2 systems), production planning, and technical metallurgical consultation
- Strong analytical and statistical skills with demonstrated ability to perform root cause analysis, failure investigation, and continuous process improvement in steel manufacturing environments
- Experience managing metallographic and mechanical testing laboratories, including supervision, budget oversight, equipment evaluation, and implementation of improved testing processes
- Ability to provide technical leadership, communicate effectively with cross-functional teams and customers, manage multiple priorities, and contribute to research and innovation initiatives within a heavy industrial setting
