Job description
Assistant Design Manager (DFMA/Technical) role based in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia within a large-scale construction and project management consultancy environment, supporting one of the largest programmes in the Kingdom involving major mixed-use development including sports facilities, entertainment, arts, and associated infrastructure. The role supervises daily activities of business design management plans and ensures effectiveness in meeting business, statutory, legal, and contractual requirements. It focuses on applying Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DFMA) principles from concept through IFC, reviewing drawings, specifications, and technical submissions for accuracy, buildability, manufacturability, and alignment with project standards. The role coordinates multidisciplinary design packages and works closely with architects, engineers, specialist suppliers, and off-site manufacturers to optimise design for production and assembly. It manages interface resolution between factory-produced elements and on-site installation requirements, identifies risks, and proposes technical solutions. It tracks design progress through logs, reports, workshops, and reviews to ensure deliverables meet programme, quality, and compliance requirements. It supports value engineering activities, sequencing considerations, tolerances, lifting/handling inputs, assembly methodology, and assists with RFIs, design markups, technical clarifications, and coordination meetings with consultants, contractors, and internal design teams. The role requires knowledge of design and construction systems, familiarity with safety legislation and contracts, and understanding of prefabrication and reporting requirements within high-value infrastructure programmes delivered by a project management consultancy business such as Mace, operating under values including safety first, client focus, integrity, and continuous improvement.
Required skills
Key responsibilities
- Support the design manager in coordinating multidisciplinary design packages and ensure DFMA (Design for Manufacture and Assembly) principles are applied from concept through IFC, ensuring that all design outputs are optimised for off-site fabrication, construction efficiency, compliance with project standards, and alignment with statutory and contractual requirements across large-scale mixed-use development programmes including sports, entertainment, arts, and infrastructure components.
- Review drawings, specifications, and technical submissions in detail to ensure accuracy, buildability, manufacturability, and compliance with project requirements, identifying inconsistencies, gaps, or coordination issues between disciplines while ensuring that all design documentation aligns with project standards and supports efficient construction and assembly processes.
- Coordinate closely with architects, engineers, specialist suppliers, and off-site manufacturers to optimise design solutions for production and assembly, ensuring that all multidisciplinary inputs are aligned, interfaces are resolved early, and design intent is maintained while improving construction efficiency and reducing onsite complexity.
- Manage interface resolution between factory-produced elements and on-site installation requirements by identifying risks, clashes, and coordination challenges, and proactively proposing technical solutions that ensure seamless integration of prefabricated components within the overall construction methodology and programme requirements.
- Track and monitor design progress through structured logs, reports, workshops, and design review sessions, ensuring that deliverables are produced in accordance with programme timelines, quality expectations, and compliance requirements, while maintaining clear visibility of design status across all stakeholders.
- Support value engineering activities by contributing to discussions on sequencing, tolerances, lifting and handling considerations, assembly methodologies, and construction optimisation strategies, ensuring that design decisions balance cost efficiency, buildability, quality, and operational performance outcomes.
- Assist with RFIs, design markups, technical clarifications, and coordination meetings with consultants, contractors, and internal design teams, ensuring timely resolution of technical queries and maintaining clear communication channels across all project stakeholders to support uninterrupted design progression.
- Ensure compliance with safety legislation, construction standards, and contractual obligations while supporting continuous improvement initiatives, contributing to a culture of safety first, integrity, and client focus by identifying risks, supporting mitigation strategies, and promoting best practice across all design management activities.
Experience & skills
- Possess a degree in design or a related discipline, demonstrating formal academic grounding in design principles, technical drawing interpretation, and construction-related methodologies applicable to large-scale infrastructure and mixed-use development projects.
- Demonstrate strong knowledge of design and construction systems, including understanding of buildability, manufacturability, and coordination requirements across multiple disciplines, ensuring the ability to assess and improve complex design outputs for practical implementation.
- Show familiarity with safety legislation, contractual frameworks, and construction compliance requirements, ensuring that all design activities are conducted in alignment with legal, statutory, and project-specific obligations within high-value programmes.
- Exhibit basic reporting capabilities and understanding of prefabrication principles, including the ability to contribute to structured documentation, design tracking logs, and coordination reports that support effective communication and decision-making.
- Demonstrate relevant experience working on high-value construction or infrastructure projects within a project management consultancy environment, ensuring familiarity with large-scale programme delivery expectations and stakeholder coordination requirements.
- Show ability to work within multidisciplinary teams, coordinating with architects, engineers, suppliers, and contractors to support integrated design delivery and resolve technical challenges in complex project environments.
- Possess awareness of Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DFMA) principles and their application in real-world construction projects, ensuring the ability to contribute to design optimisation and off-site construction strategies.
- Meet visa eligibility criteria for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and demonstrate relevant international or regional experience required for client approval and successful integration into large-scale project delivery environments.
