Job description
The Senior Design Manager at Al-Futtaim Contracting will oversee and coordinate all design activities across major construction projects in the UAE, ensuring technical integrity, timely delivery, and compliance with contractual and safety standards. The role requires leading multidisciplinary design teamsâincluding architects, structural, and MEP engineersâwhile managing design deliverables from inception through final handover. Responsibilities span implementing the Design Management Plan (DMP), ensuring BIM data accuracy, conducting risk analysis, securing necessary approvals, and coordinating design information across trades and subcontractors. The position plays a key role in managing design-related claims, EOT requests, and design cost control, while maintaining full alignment with baseline programmes and employer requirements. The Senior Design Manager also ensures robust document control, maintains IMS compliance, and engages with clients, consultants, and PMCs to resolve technical issues and drive design excellence. This role requires a strong blend of leadership, technical expertise, and commercial awareness within Tier 1 GCC contracting environments.

Key responsibilities
- Implement and manage the Design Management Plan (DMP) to coordinate and secure design approvals in alignment with project schedules
- Lead the design team across architecture, structural, and MEP disciplines, ensuring full coordination and compliance with project specifications
- Conduct risk analysis and apply corrective actions to maintain performance standards and client satisfaction
- Identify and execute value engineering opportunities to optimize project cost and design efficiency
- Oversee BIM coordination and ensure all model data is accurate, current, and distributed appropriately across trades
- Work with commercial and planning teams to identify variations, delays, and support claims preparation and EOT submissions
- Manage change control processes, including tracking design changes, resolving missing contract information, and recording instructions
- Engage with clients, consultants, and PMCs to resolve design-related issues and ensure alignment with employer requirements
- Supervise and mentor junior design staff, fostering continuous technical and professional development
- Ensure design documentation, material approvals, mock-ups, and as-built information are complete and compliant at handover
Experience & skills
- Bachelorâs degree in Architecture, Structural, Civil, or MEP Engineering (Architecture preferred)
- 15â20 years of experience in construction design management, including 10+ years with Tier 1 main contractors in the GCC
- Proficiency in BIM modeling and design coordination within large-scale construction projects
- Strong knowledge of design management principles, document control, and risk assessment procedures
- Experience in contract compliance, claims management, and EOT preparation
- Proven ability to lead multidisciplinary teams and coordinate with multiple stakeholders
- Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills
- Familiarity with international design standards, HSE requirements, and IMS documentation systems
- Ability to manage multiple concurrent design packages while maintaining schedule and cost control
